advice for a UV filter for Z1 (UK)?
hi there
I was looking to buy a B+W UV filter to protect the lens of my Z1 but the 72mm is currently impossible to find in the UK (I am talking about the slim version non MRC) anyone has an advice of a good UV filter for lens protection that can be mounted without having problems with the lens hood? thanks Federico |
I believe the standard B+W F-Pro ring will fit under the hood on a Sony Z1. The EX1 and EX3 both have this same issue and the standard B+W F-Pro mount works fine for UV filters. Polarizers must be the slim version however.

would this work you think?

Hi Federico.
I wouldnt bother with any filter, unless used for effects. The moment you put a filter in front of a lens you will lose something. Lenses these days, with their multi coating are pretty tough, and the lens on the Z1 sits back in the hood a safe distance from any harm. |
I'm right with Colin on this one - don't fit filters till you absolutely must (you're off out to film twisters or tsunamis). Soon as you fit a filter (any filter) you reduce the efficiency of your lens hood, and that's pretty inefficient anyhow for any focal length other than max wide-angle.
You say 'to protect the lens on my Z1'. Tell us what sort of dangerous shooting you're doing and we might agree a UV's a good idea. Generally the words are these: 'Filters add nothing, they only take away'. Thank you Herbert Keppler. tom. |
