9:04 AM, rough cut clip (Z1)

This is a clip from the rough cut of my film, 9:04 AM, shot by Jon Fordham. We shot it in 50i with CineFrame 25, with a Tobacco filter (among other things--Jon will explain) via a matte box. I cut in native HDV in Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 and then created a new sequence and set it to Photojpeg at 75% Quality (4:2:2 uncompressed HD, 8-bit), rendered and exported a QT Movie. Converted that to 23.98 fps and re-imported into FCP onto a timeline with Photojpeg-75 and 23.98 fps.

Edit: Had to change the link, because it was about to get shut down from the traffic (thanks to everyone who checked it out!). It's not the best (myspace), but the bandwidth won't be an issue.

Hi Heath

It looks good...

One question...why did you use Cineframe and not just do it in post in FCP using something like the Nattress plugs ins?

why 50i by the way, isn't that the Pal format?

Heath McKnight November 4th, 2006 08:26 AM

PAL is "dead" in the HD/HDV world...it's 50i and 60i, because it's all the same frame size, color space information, etc. PAL in the DV world is higher quality all around. Check out the book Douglas Spotted Eagle, Mark Dileo and I wrote on HDV for more.

25 frames per second is very close to 23.98 fps (just a 4% slowdown in Cinema Tools). Why didn't we shoot 50i and de-interlace with Nattress' tools? Jon explains it best in his V1 review (he talks about 9:04 AM):

Also, that method of shooting in 50i/CF25 and going through the process of changing it to 23.98 fps? That's all Graeme Nattress!
