Issues Capturing DV w/DSR 11 Deck

Hello, hope you all can help. My partner and I shot a behind the scenes event documentary for which we rented two Z1’s. We both have a few years experience with the PD170 so I though these cameras would be easy for us to use. I wanted to check if maybe I made a mistake with the settings on one of the cameras. Camera A’s tapes all capture fine, But all 10 of Camera B’s tapes have a problem. When I playback in FCP’s Capture Window, every other second there are scattered distortions, or what maybe better described as scattered digital artifacts. The problem is throughout the duration of the tape. When I try to capture I get the Error Message.

“ Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. To capture as much of your footage as possible, please log and capture a clip that ends before this segment, and another that starts right after it.“

We Have 2 decks so I tried switching and got an entirely different error message,

“This operation could not be completed as there is no video.”

I must admit it maybe time to get our decks cleaned, tuned up or whatever. But I haven’t had problems with footage for other projects shot on the PD170,

Also if I view one frame at a time in capture mode the distortions are not there even if I frame advance though an area that was problematic during playback.

We shot in DV Anamorphic, HD. Capturing using a Sony DSR-11 DV Deck onto a Dual Processor G5, and I’m in PAL world. I thought I’d check before I call the rental company and raise “some stuff .” Please help…anything I can do to salvage this footage?

I assume BOTH Z1s were set to 50i (and not 60i) during shooting?

- Does the footage from Camera B play back fine when viewed on Camera A?
- Have you checked the settings on Camera B to make sure they are the same as Camera A?
- Have you tried capturing the footage using the camera to rule out a faulty deck?
- Did you use the same type of tapes for both Camera A and Camera B?
