Picture Profile

When I did a training course on the Z1 we never covered picture profile and I've being going along with it set to its default settings. I've now been looking at the manual and it looks like it could offer some benefits but I'm reluctant to start tinkering with stuff I don't fully understand.

Can anyone recommend any sites that might elaborate/offer good settings for picture profile?

cheers

Check out the HDV book and Z1/FX1 training DVD at www.vasst.com there are a lot of cool setting recommendations and how to set it. The biggest thing is, there are some settings you can put in, but start creating your own. The ones that look good for you (and/or your clients).

Welcome to DVinfo Neil! See the following thread for some ideas:

But I think Heath's advice is great, learn what works best for you. I think the only way to really learn this is to set the camera up with a decent HD monitor connected to it via the component cable. Then just engage in some "creative play" and observe the effects on the monitor. Unfortunately the builtin LCD screen is really too small to show the subtleties of the different options. Use the highest resolution monitor you can find, because otherwise you may discover noise or other artifacts which you didn't realize were there.

Great points and thanks for the link, Boyd. I'll follow up that reading a book and watching a DVD won't help much if one doesn't do it. I mention this only because I have a friend with a newly purchased Z1 (about 5 months ago) that just sits around. He can tell you all sorts of profiles, but I don't think he could tell you what it looks like. Plus, I think he's more interested in renting it out than using it for himself.

just hdv?

Thanks for both the replys. I'll check out the link.

a quick question based on your replys...is picture profile mainly used when shooting hdv?

Heath McKnight November 28th, 2006 03:58 PM

I always shoot HDV for everything, then capture and edit in HDV and deliver in SD or HD. Better quality. But if you have to shoot in DV/DVCAM, the picture profiles still work. Only thing that turns off is CineFrame when switching between 50i and 60i.

The BBC have a page with some suggested settings for various cameras, including the Z1:

Edit: ah, here's the Z1-specific page:
