Keying with the Z5 (green screen)

For anyone out there that says you can't key HDV, it has been done. I did a shoot the other day with my Z5 and the key was beautiful. We brought it into FCS as ProRes 1440x1080 and it was keyed with the stock keyer in Final Cut. I don't know how the key would look in an HD timeline, but it looked beautiful downconverted to SD.

If you want to see pics of the setup and a screen grab of the key, visit my blog at:

I have never heard you can't Key HDV I have been doing it for awhile, not professionally, but it looks as good of a key as my old stuff in SD. I keep it in HD I don't down convert and it looks fine.

Good job. I think the people who say "you can't use green screen on HDV" are like the same people who say "you can't install Final Cut Pro on Mac Book."

HDV will have less room for error in your green screen than something that is 4:2:2, but if you're not a intense SFX drama, HDV will probably do fine if you light it correctly. Same goes for running FCP on a Mac Book, FCP will be better on a Mac Pro, but it will still run on the consumer grade model, just not as well.

Bottom line it is what works for you, & it looks like it is working for you just fine.
