This is more like it! Few people seem to be getting indie with the Z7. Have you used a 35mm adapter with this camera?

Also John, Did you buy the ikan in Europe or order from USA?

John Bour August 21st, 2008 08:52 AM

Hi Jon,

For indie-, music video's and commercials I use the Z7 with the redrock M2 35mm adapter and Nikon glass, with great results..
I love this camera, especially the low-light performance and the manual control.
Rolling shutter problems don't matter for my kind of work,
and I did not experience a n y of the problems talked about on these forums
(like soft images, focussing problems etc).

I don't know why it seems there are only event/wedding videographers using it.
Maybe it's just that they are over-represented in this forum?

I ordered the Ikan from B&H in New York.
I do not recommend it though. It is very flimsy/plasticy,
the colors are completely off and almost impossible to adjust,
I had to shave off some of the plastic to be able to mount the battery,
and after 2 months the on/off button started to work erraticately.
It's good for framing and focussing, but
I wish I'd got a Marshall/Nebtek rightaway..

cheers,
John

Thanks for the news on the Ikan, I was going to get one. Which model Nebtek, on a budget, is best for focusing?

Have you any examples of Z7 with 35mm Redrock? I'm saving for a sgpro with canon FD lenses, and would love to see the results with an adapter.

I heard you couldn't use the Redrock because of the auto focus only macro with the Z7? With the acromat does it work without the macro?

John Bour August 21st, 2008 10:22 AM

I'll see if I can post some stuff Z7/M2 stuff.

There was some initial confusion about using the Z7 with a 35mm adapter;
it looked like you could only use the required 'macro' mode with autofocus,
but that's not true; the cam has to be in autofocus to engage macro-mode,
then you can override autofocus and set focus manually.

the achromat has nothing to do with this..it is always required.

Cheers John. I've worked out how to focus manually with macro focus as well

Mine isn't as sexy as yours, but man that redrockmicro is on my wish list for sure, looks great on your camera.

I concur with the large number of wedding/event users on the Z7U forum, but everyone's gotta make a living. I use mine for ENG and Interviews - going to use it for a PBS shoot next month with my Fig Rig. I'd like to try a RRMicro some time and try some creative shoots or music videos.

Jon - Great! You can use any 35mm adapter. I don't know of the SGPro, but the RR M2
works well for me. And the RedRock people/Brian Valente are very accessable and helpful.
There is a separate microX module that flips the image, but according RR it does not work correctly with Sony camera's.
A specific microX-sony version is announced.
And I suspect they will introduce an all-in-one version soon..their design is a little bit outdated.

Scott - I think the Z7 is a great camera for ENG work, we use it for that too;
it is small, the cards make ingesting footage anywhere easy and quick,
and low-light is great which often means no annoying oncam light needed.
I have no problem whatever with wedding/event filming..there are some great examples
on this website. But I feel that the one drawback this camera might have (rolling shutter)
is maybe overemphasized because of this particular use.

quality-wise:
We also have a PDW-355 and intercut Z7 footage all the time without any problems.
Good luck with your shoot next month, maybe you can post some pics with the figrig?

Scott Caplan August 24th, 2008 06:46 PM

I'll see what I can do. The Fig Rig is good for about 4 hours of continuous use, then my arms turn to jelly. The camera is pretty heavy with the larger battery pack, fig clamp with shotgun mic, and lights mounted to the rig.

John...

Do you mind telling me where you got the speed handle for your Redrock follow focus? I've looked all over for one. There's not one shown on the Redrock site.

John Bour August 28th, 2008 07:15 AM

here it is:
microSpeedCrank

I'm not sure if the link takes you to the page; if not:
from their website choose 'purchase' to enter the shop,
then you'll find it listed as speedcrank under the followfocus items.

Bill Ravens August 28th, 2008 07:31 AM

wow!
many thanx.
