EA50 & VG20 match?
 

Next week I will be using my EA50 in pre-set #3 and using a loaned VG20 on the set too. I think one of the regulars here does this a lot? Any suggestions on matching?

Funny thing is I looked at the VG20 and laughed...I have not had to "read" consumer menu icons in many years!

I used it once to shoot a live performance.

I borrowed the VG20 from a friend, and of course he forgot both to charge it and to include the charger. And it was at 4% battery...

As I was unfamiliar with it, trying to set it up, I tried to set it to full auto but I think gain got stuck at 30dB so the camera probably needed to use high shutter speeds, giving the footage some rolling effects and it was a bit grainy.
Still I felt that they matched up pretty good. I used the EA50 with the stock lens and the VG20 with the Sony 50mm/1.8...

the 20 and 50 are a perfect match as they use the same sensor for video acquisition.

They might use the same sensor but as I understood the vg20 doesn't have any picture profiles so you are probably going to tweak the ea50 anyway to get a good match.

I'd rather tweek the VG20 in post to match the EA50 than to tweek the EA50 to match the VG20 as the EA50 is probably going to be the main camera...

I found out at last wedding I did my ea50 is matching very well with my sony handicams (cx730), I used the abel cine pictureprofile where I just have to crush the blacks a bit more to get it right. It's only more difficult to get a match with my canon t2i (550d).
Guess if you want to adjust the vg20 in post you"ll need to shoot with a flatter pictureprofile on the ea50?

I set my EA50 to PP5 on the first day and never changed it since ;)

I have used pp5 for one of my films but it crushes the blacks a lot, nice for sunny outdoor but not so good for indoor where I prefer the abelcine preset. Would you say the pp5 preset matches the vg20 best?

No, I'm just saying I can't be bothered so much with the picture profiles ;)
I did some testing and the PP5 look appealed the most to me so it stuck. One of these days I experiment more with them...

Has anyone tried to match the VG-30? I understand that it has picture profiles.

VG30 and EA50 are practically the same to be honest. Because the EA50 deep inside is basically a VG30 from what I have read.

And with Picture Profiles it will be easy to match.

Reason no comparison has been done is because the VG30 costs not much less than a EA50. Where as the VG20 is much cheaper now.

With default PPs , the 50 and 20 match perfectly.
