I can't directly answer, but I have the Tokina AT-X 28-70mm f2.8 for my Nikons and it is an 'okay' lens, nothing great but perfectly useable. In still photos on the D800 it is quite soft wide open and displays chromatic abberation. I think it is quite an old design, dating from an Angenieux design of the 1980s. I have used it for video on the D800 and it is perfectly adequate. It doesn't compare well to a more expensive lens like my Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 which is much sharper, focuses faster and is better corrected.

Having said that, here in the UK they can be bought second hand for around £200 so are not too expensive.

I sold my Tamron 28-75 simply because it was too much zoom for me at weddings!! I seldom used it but when I did it was sharp but tricky to focus for some reason. The only Tokina I have is the super wide so that doesn't really count.

The Tamron is a nice lens if you need the zoom but the Tamron 17-50 F2,8 I find a lot sharper and easier to focus. If you are looking for sharpness then maybe see what Sigma has? Their 24-70 is supposed to be good but pricey mine was very good but the zoom got sticky... I don't have a 24-70 any more but my 18-35 F1.8 is razor sharp especially if you get the art series lenses.

Just a small point with manual lenses ..try to find a non stabilised lens ..they are always sharper ..I have two Tamron 17-50's and the non VC is way sharper than the VC version!!!

i have tamron 17-50 2.8 without vc,looking for something in between 50 to 80,the 24-70 will get him in the summer.Currently we are looking for 28-70,surrounded the Tokina AT-X PRO AF 28-70mm

While the Tokina is not one of the sharpest lenses in the world
it's quite fast and very well built.
It has a very big focus ring and is therefore easier to focus by hand than
any other zoom-lens I had.

FYI: I have one for Canon EF and have no need for it anymore
