PC transfer times
 

Thought people may be interested in transfer times. I have an FMU128 together with a 32G Patriot Class 10 SDHC card. I recorded about 1 hour and 10 mins and the transfer times were:- SDHC card 18 mins, FMU128 4 mins. Transfer from the SDHC card was in the camera and I haven't tried from a card reader to see if it would be faster. The FMU128 transfers at about the same rate that the AVCHD hard drives do from my SR11 and XR500, maybe just a little faster. I think my mode of operation will be to use the Patriot as a backup and only transfer if there is a problem with the FMU. Transfer is easy though in both cases using the Sony Content Management software. The Motion Browser software for my Sr11 and XR500 will also transfer the files. Vegas Pro9 will play files from the timeline but I am looking forward to Edius 5.5 next month as this will bring the Booster technology to Edius that is now only on Neo 2.5. Edius by the way will read the time code from the camera but Vegas starts all clips at 0 !!!!

I'm a little confused about the Content Manager Software. I'm just copying the files directly from the FMU128. I know it will stitch together clips that were broken due to the size limit....but other than that, what's the advantage?

I was hoping it would give me the opportunity to capture all the footage in one continuous clip, like I can do in Vegas. But apparently not??

Yes, that's exactly what the Content Manager software does. Creates clips as defined by the start and stop NOT the FAT32 limits. It works just like the Motion Browser software for the consumer cams. Of interest is that the Motion Browser software will see and transfer the NX5U files but not the other way around!!!! My recommendation is to always use the Content manager to transfer files to the PC. It will bring in all the meta data such as timecode and GPS data etc.
