aiming system
 

I am looking at some sort of aiming system I could attach to one or both of the cold shoes on the Sony HXR-NX5U. I will be using this camera to record free flying Macaws that I take out regularly. Trying to watch them in the LCD screen is impossible in bright light and the eyecup, while better, is still not ideal. I was thinking of some sort of rectangular aiming attachment that I could mount on both cold shoes and then simply look through these two rectangles much light open sights on a rifle. This would allow me to easily track the birds without necessarily having to view them in the eyecup. Anyone familiar with any attachment to a cold shoe like this or do I need to fabricate one on my own?

i think this post maybe old and you may have already found something, but i think you need to get hold of the Z-Finder EVF which is HDMI...

I have done some experimentation with a red-dot sight usually used for pistol and rifles. There are standardized mounts for guns, Picatinny and Weaver rail mounts, that can be bolted to camera shoe attachment. I can say that the red dot sight does its job very well you can even aim with your head at some distance from the camera. I'm often recording animals at some distance. I'm zoomed all the way in and then they move. Takes half my shooting time just reacquiring them.
I'm still not happy with the mount to the camera and am still experimenting. I need something that can be removed and reattached without having to carefully recalibrate the sight. The real trouble is the shoe mounts have too much play so I'm fiddling with a spacer that will give the sight a second point of contact with the camera.
