flicker reduce setting on NX5U
 

I think the factory default is to have "flicker reduce" set to ON for the NX5U. The instruction manual says this may be of benefit when shooting with fluorescent light sources. But of course they don't say exactly what technique they use to counteract the flicker. And whether it should be left on all the time or only used under these kind of light conditions.

Any one out there who may know more about this? A manipulation of the shutter speed comes to mind, but if that was it, I think you would see the shutter speed change in some way. Or is it something they do with their DSP?

From my point of view, I'm wondering whether I should keep it set to OFF unless I'm actually shooting under fluorescents...otherwise, maybe somewhere something is taking a hit qualitywise?

Most likely the Flicker Reduce settings takes effect when flicker is detected and does use a preset shutter speed for lighting with a frequency probably set to 60Hz (for NTSC cameras) --- you could always change the shutter speed manually if it does not work.

This is explained on page 50 of the EX1 manual (not explained in the NX5U manual) --- on that camera it is adjustable and can also be set to auto, on or off. Hopefully the NX5U is set to auto --- but I do not know.

Your note about the EX-1 and how "flicker reduce" works sounds logical...that if the "flicker reduce" is toggled on (in the NX5U I believe it's either "on" or "off") and that it would impose the correct shutter speed to minimize flicker.

SInce most of the time I use the NX5U and dictate the shutter speed, this feature won't really benefit me as using manual shutter sounds like it will override the "flicker reduce" function. My concern is whether there was something else other than shutter speed that the NX5U might be using if "flicker reduce" was toggled on...but after giving it more thought, I do tend to agree with you...that the only thing it's really affecting is the shutter speed if you are using auto shutter.

Just wish the instruction manual was more detailed on these kind of things...
