Short video made with the FS100 & kit lens
 

Just a short test video I made yesterday with the FS100 and the kit lens.
Nothing special, but I thought others might like to see it also.

Nice! For all the bashing of that lens I've heard, it seems to produce
some pretty nice looking images. Looks like you were shooting in the
sun, what did you use for ND?

Yes I also think the lens is better then some of the reviews might let you think it is.
Of course there are better lenses to buy, but I think it's great to start with the kit lens. It can produce very sharp and nice looking images and works great for run'n'gun shooting.

Even if I would own a Nikon to E-mount adapter, and able to put my Nikon lenses on the camera, I would still keep this lens in my camera bag.

Didn't use a ND filter. The local camera store was out of stock! Bummer :)

Thanks for the update! I was just wondering, although for run and
gun you can just iris down. I have been looking at the new Tiffin
variable ND that was introduced at NAB, and at the variable ND that
Phillip Bloom reviews on his blog as two possible options. They both
claim to not introduce color casts and claim to be very sharp. Might
be some good options to look at, if you are willing to spend $300 on a
variable ND filter.

Anyways, it's nice to see footage that looks that
good out of the kit lens! My original idea was to buy the camera with
the kit lens to use for run and gun shooting (probably giving a look more
similar to an EX-1 type camera) and then buy a couple 'fast' zooms
with a good variable ND filter to use for more controlled set ups,
so I could get the shallow depth of field look. Then, I had a lot of
people telling me that the kit lens 'sucked' and so forth. Of course most
people saying this were more of the 'cinematic' type shooters, so they don't
see a use for a slower zoom lens. I wasn't expecting the kit lens to be as
nice as a good fast lens, but was hoping it would be usable. Judging from your
images, it can certainly produce some good looking stuff!!

How are you getting the shallow depth of field without having any ND?
Faster shutter speeds? On a side note, I very much dislike Fed Ex right
now. I ordered my FS-100 UK on Thursday of last week and paid an extra
$155 to have it delivered 2nd day air. I have been tracking it, it made it
to Seattle by Friday at 4pm. And it hasn't moved since. As of right now,
which is 2pm on Tuesday, it is still in Seattle. Why again did I pay
extra to Fed Ex? I know better than to do that.....

Sorry Fed Ex, I apologize. As I was sitting at my desk stewing....wondering
WHY my camera was sitting in Seattle for 2 straight days without moving, and
going on the third straight day, I started refreshing my Fed Ex shipping
status every 10 minutes. Just as I was about to go out and gas up my
SUV for a couple shoots I have coming up, I refreshed, and lo and
behold, the status changed from Seattle to Juneau. It wasn't due to be
delivered until tomorrow, but I figured I'd take a chance and swing by
Fed Ex as I was going that way to get gas anyways.....and a very nice
lady went into the back and brought me the camera! I quickly
put it together and shot some video of my daughter's softball game.
I'll post that up in another thread, I'm impressed with how
well the kit lens works as a 'run and gun' with pretty nice autofocus
and auto iris. For most things, I wouldn't use it, but it's nice
to know it's there, for fast moving events. With the kit lens, you
get more of a look like a EX series, but it looks really nice,
even on wide shots......good resolution. I'll probably get a
24-70 2.8 lens as soon as I can find a ND solution. But as
I was estimating, the kit lens doesn't look bad at all, some people
may feel it 'sucks' but it seems to look pretty good to me. And
don't let it's slow speed fool you.....even with it, you really
need some ND as this chip is just amazing.

Yes, I use higher shutter speeds to get this effect. But I'm still looking for a good ND filter solution.
Good to hear you have the camera now! Not sure if you had time to do this already, but you can get very nice results by tweaking the picture profiles a bit.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to try the shutter speed thing, at
least for landscapes. I haven't played with the picture profiles yet,
but hope to soon. What settings have you found looked good?

There is a rotating double polarixzing filter which fits the stock lens, and gives up to 4 stops of reduction. I bought it at B&H for the stock lens:
GEGLGNDF67

That said, I'm looking to sell the stock lens, and I guess the polarizer with it - the polarizer works fine, but the lens is not fast enough for my purposes, and the filter will not fit the Nikkor lens i'm renting now (77mm threads needed, vs. 67mm on hte FS-100.)

Here'a a short video I made from airplanes landing at Schiphol Airport:

I didn't have a tripod with me and didn't plan on filming airplanes, but it's a nice example of shooting full auto (iris and focus) without a tripod on a very windy day with the 18-200mm kit lens and without ND filter.
Hopefully I can shoot this again on a tripod, with filter and full manual control of the camera.
So please, look at this footage as an example of how your footage will look when you didn't plan to film anything and see what the camera is capable of.

I've ordered two ND filters for the stock lens and one for the 16mm pancake lens. Hopefully they will reduce enough light to get the shutter speed down.
