fs100 with sony 16mm/2.8 pancake-thoughts?

fs100 with sony 16mm/2.8 pancake-thoughts?

i'm looking at perhaps picking up the sony 16mm/f2.8 prime as my "invisible walking around lens".

is one-push autofocus available with this sony mount + fs100?

anyone with an opinion about the sony 16mm/f2.8 pancake?

thanks in advance

be well

I'm sure a few will chime in, but I ordered this lens with my FS100 for a few reasons, the main reasons were that OIS and AF are on board and it's a very fast lens for the price. Doug's video DVD tutorial on the camera even mentions he wishes this was the stock lens with the camera instead of the 18-200mm one. I do not have the lens yet as we ordered it with the camera yesterday. I will report back after I've tried it.

I also like that you can clip on the fisheye extender for $109 more if you choose.

In the meantime, others will chime in I'm sure that have used the lens in practice, if you search the forum there's a nice merlin or glidecam support video shot using this lens that looks great.

Just got the lens this morning. Yep, nice and wide. It's so small, that it looks like a glorified lens cap on the front of the FS100.
It has autofocus, but no OIS. At this wide, I don't think that will matter.

I agree with Dennis A lens this wide, needs little in the way of auto focus.

As it does not have a built in ND filter, I'd be curious to know if a standard 49mm filter vignettes. It might require an adaptor to a larger filter, especially if you are using a variable ND.

Chuck I picked up a 49mm to 77mm step ring for my variable ND filter, I'll post my results.

That should be fine, Scott. Looking forward to hearing your results

is it continuous autofocus?
I also wonder if it will still give DOF at F/2.8

It's a nice lens, especially for the money. I also bought the wa adapter, which I think turns it into a 12mm f2-8!
We used it last night and tonight shooting an opera in a tiny black box theatre. Had to use the FS100 way up on a tripod with the wa and adapter in order to capture the room from close up, and avoid other stuff. Used the nx5 for close ups. Kind of opposite to how I woulkd normally do it, but the wa lens and adapter saved us.

I use mine with the adapter for reception work. It really works great for what it is.

for the price it's great, but it's not the sharpest one, when I compare it to Canon 15mm, you can see the difference with your naked eye.

Re: fs100 with sony 16mm/2.8 pancake-thoughts?

It's a nice compact lens that is compatible with the FS100 and makes a very compact and lightweight package. Pretty much the smallest and lightest you can get the FS100. Used it on my Steadicam Merlin a lot so in that way it is very useful and not too expensive. I also got the extra wide adapter for it that was on sale for a while.

However, I think that it is probably optically not the best lens possible, and exhibits a bit of CA and edges. For convenience it can't be beat, but if you need the ultimate quality the Tokina 11-16 would probably be a bit better quality.

I used mine yesterday with the wa extender for steadycam and it worked great.
