What kind of load can the lens mount handle?
 

I'm actually about to pick up a fs700, but decided to ask here because this forum has more activity than the 700 forum, and it seems doubtful there would be any difference.

But, I was wondering what kind of load the camera can handle lens-wise, without any additional support (rods, etc.)

Specifically, I am curious about something like the Canon 70-200mm, used with the Metabones adapter.
I'm not sure of the exact weight, but it is less than 3.28 lb (This is the weight of the version 2, and I have the version 1, which I know weighs less).

Can I feel comfortable with that sort of lens on my camera with no support?

I realize that whether the adapter can handle it is a whole other question, but this seems like a good place to start.

I shoot with the FS100 and have the metabones, and numerous Canon , Nikon and Sony loenss. I wouldn't use the 70-200 without support on the rails; it"s just too heavy. A friend just lnt me his 24-70 l series f2.8, and I feel that even that lens is too heavy without support.

Let's see if this works.

What you see in the picture is my basic rig ( thanks Jean Phillipe) which is made up of
1- A genus mounting block
2- rails
3- Cavision handles
4- Indian follow focus
5- a potabrace pad
6-berkey system mounting plate and handle
7- Small hd mounting arm for Zacuto monitor
8-Zacuto monitor and z finder.
9- Lens support that I bought originall from dvtech in Isreal with another rig.this support slides onto the rails and gets tightend down, then height adjusted.
10- Metabones adapter for Canon lenses.

I borrowed a friend's Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens ( beautifull) but very heavy. The lens support slides on the rails and is height adjustable. It also has a thumb screw for additional micro adjustment. To protect the lens from the tightening bolt scratching the finish, I wedge a little pice of foam between the support and the lens. I didn't need a follow focus ring for this lens , because it's wide enough so that the ffocus gear reaches the focus ring on the lens itself. I wouldn't risk mounting a lens this heavy ( opr my 70-200 f2.8) without support. Maybe it's overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I see what you mean. Sort of 'seat belts for lenses'.

I guess you can eyeball it. I looked at my FS100 wearing a Tokina 80-200, and it wasn't happy. Whilst the alternative is to put the camera on the lens (hey, it's an FS100!), that doesn't work well on the rig and those little 'noggins' (is that what you call the bits of 2"x4" wood you'd put crosswise in a stud-wall?) seem to do a good job.

As far as those wood bits you mentioned, I don't know what they are.
