Weighing the benefits of an external recorder

I'm considering purchasing an external recorder for my NEX FS700. Currently, the broadcasters I've dealt with in Canada accept pictures/outputs recorded to in-camera media card recorder, even though they are 8 bit, 24Mbps (I think that's right). I think the pictures look great and the workflow is simple.

However, if I understand it correctly, an Atomos Ninja or Samauri or some such device would give me the 10 bit , 50Mbps that is industry standard. But is it? If broadcasters in North America care less and less about 10 bit, 50Mbps, why buy an external recorder? Will I actually notice an improvement in workflow and video quality under moderate colour correction and composting to justify the expense? Is the viewfinder better and more flexible than the poorly designed one on the FS700?

When is an external recorder a good idea and which one is best for the FS700? (PS the 4k upgrade, sounds like it might be a budget buster, but maybe I should save my money and buy that when it comes out.)

I'd appreciate any feedback and recommendations.

Re: Weighing the benefits of an external recorder

Peter, I've found most broadcasters in Canada and the US except the 28Mbps from the FS700.
I use a PIX 240 to record 240Mbps for all my European and agency work.

FS700 Systems
