Getting some very faint horizontal lines after playing back footage taken with my Sony TRV-950


Hi,
After using my new Sony TRV-950 for a few weeks ive noticed some faint horizontal lines when I'm recording a light back ground, IE my kid swinging in his swing against a white wall, or white cloud against a light blue sky.
The lines are very faint, and you can only just notice them.
The lines don't go right across the screen, only from where the darker subject meets the lighter background
The problem seems worse if I'm panning the camcorder.

In normal use the camcorder seems to be fine, and no horizontal lines are visible.

Everything is set to auto.

What do you think could be causing this?

Seems like some sort of analog problem. Have you tried on a different TV or monitor? Are the lines also visible on the LCD and viewfinder?

The lines are not visible on the LCD/viewfinder.

I'll try my other TV and see if the problem is still there.

The lines seem much better on my old TV than on my newer 32in TV.
You can only just see them on the old TV, and I dont think I would be able to see them if I didnt know they were there.

So is this a fault of my TV or camcorder? and can I do anything about it?

If the 'new or old' tv is a SONY trinitron you are seeing the famous lines coming off the mask in the tube. Sorry i don't know the exact technical terminology, but Sony tv's and some based on the same technology can show a couple lines through bright flat areas on the screen, horizontal lines that is.

It had to do with the way the tube was aranged and it had physical pieces of metal or something holding it in place, which you are seeing. I just know u can see them on the tv's, not exactly sure of the reasonings for it.

My newer TV is a Philips Match line 32 in & my older TV is a Sony trinitron 28 in.

Trinitron tube technology uses stretced vertical wire as the "shadow mask". This concept has advantages w.r.t. image brightness but turns out to be very shock and vibration sensitive. The two horizontal wires are woven in the structure in order to damp vibrations. Still one can show this trinitron sensitivity by just tapping with the hand on the CRT faceplate and watch the vibrating brightness and color changes..
