PD150 Cover/Jacket
 

Can anyone please advise me of a protective cover to keep the weather elements, e.g. rain etc, out of my PD150?

Kata , Porta Brace and Petrol have high quality rain covers. They are pricey but usually well worth the cost..

Rain Cover Experience?
 

I have followed links to Kata, Portabrace or Petrol rain covers, but does anyone have experience/recommendations (i.e. which are easiest on/off; which offer best access to camcorder controls; etc) to help select among those for VX2000 in my case. During drive from St. Paul, MN to Seattle, WA last week encountered snow in mountains, rain and drizzle in Seattle and Victoria, BC combined with bursts of sunlight. Created some great lighting and photo ops but also need for some rain protection for VX2000.

The Kata and petrol are usually knockoffs of each other. The Kata is popular and fairly easy to use. I haven't bought one yet, just played with other peoples (Slickers that is).

I've got the PortaBrace for my PD150 and I think its great. Really easy to get it on and off, protects well, I've used it in windy, rainy situations with barely a drop on the cam. It was a little pricey, but well worth it I think.

I got the PortaBrace for my PD150 too, but in Vancouver where we have my days of rain then sun, I've encountered a few occations where my camera has gotten wet. I was filling a salmon egg take in the pouring rain all day, for about eight hours. At the end of the day I turned the cam off then tried to turn it back on, but it just showed a little rain drop icon.

After letting it dry out over night it worked perfectly normal.

I could drive to Romford from here for the rain jacket. Are they £2.50 in his shop? And they fit the VX2k OK? How does it fit around the lens, and can you have a wide-angle converter fitted?

I got mine before Xmas at Auction (I had to go to a fiver to win it - peanuts) The seller puts one on every two weeks or so (he has one on currently - check his other auctions), I think he deals in bankrupt stock etc. Might be worth dropping him an email to check he has sufficient stock or buy one from him outright. I think this model was originally designed for the old Sony Hi8 6000 (kingcorder)

I modified mine - if you look at the photo the perspex lens window can be removed (snap fit) and the vx lens can be poked through - I then made a cylinder of loose polythene and glued it to a rubber lens hood and glued the polythene to the lens window housing - looks very neat and gives me control over focussing etc

The silver material seems to breathe air but repels water (good as it stops the cam from sweating) and it also looks professional with Sony emblazoned across the side. It gets approving looks!

The window at the side is made of transparent rubber material and there is a slit at the back for the viewfinder to poke out

To complete the design is a neat plastic bar with press studs to batten down the cover if needed or it can be left loose to get hand inside etc

Remember those April showers a few weeks back - I got wet but my cam was dryzabone

I reckon you could shoot sea wall sprays with confidence but I will let you know round October for that

Neil, encountered the great scenery in and around Victoria for first time on recent time limited trip and I think scenes were enhanced by rain/sun conditions; but showed need for rain cover. Thanks for your input and Bryan and Brian thanks also.
