Sony offers $300 rebate on PD-170

I will leave it to others to speculate on what this might signify (if anything)...

Mike Rehmus August 19th, 2004 07:26 PM

Oh thanks for that! Now we'll have reams of speculation until whatever is going to happen, does. :-))

Boyd Ostroff August 19th, 2004 08:08 PM

Hey, don't shoot the messenger! ;-) Now how long was it from the time when Canon announced the rebate until the introduction of the XL-2? A little over 6 months maybe?...

Glen Elliott August 20th, 2004 07:58 AM

Figures- everytime I buy a cam it seems within 6 months they offer a rebate.

It happens so often I'm starting to think I can *control* when they give rebates for any given camera.
Anyone want a rebate on a specific camera?...Let me know, I'll go buy it...wait 6 months and you'll have your rebate. lol

Seriously though I think it's a little too early for a 170 replacement. Maybe they wanted to boost sales- though I could be wrong- the 170 isn't really a "new" camera to begin with- it's the 150 w/ tweaks.

Still going to wait for their HDV model

Glen! Please! Buy an XL2!!! :)

Michael Struthers August 20th, 2004 05:25 PM

Yess!! C'mon Sony! 16x9 & 24p! SD is not dead baby!

*L*

Glen Elliott August 21st, 2004 10:10 AM

I whole-heartedly agree...a native 16x9 chip and 24p would be great. If anything HDV is dead...or should I say not "alive" yet. Until the masses (clients) have a way to view the final product it's not worth going HD yet.

Mike Hanlon August 22nd, 2004 01:57 PM

But wait, there's more.

As I discovered at NAB and MacWorld this year, B&H runs specials for shows that it attends. With WEVA going on in Vegas this last week, I wondered if there were any specials available so I tried some experimental surfing on the B&H site. Sure enough, there are some specials and the PD-170 is among them, $200 their regular price. With the rebate, that's a $500 savings!

So I bought one.

You can too. Go to:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/weva (sorry, can't remember the syntax for properly posting a url)

If it weren't for the slightly inferior MPEG2 compression, I'd consider capturing in HDV and still delivering SD for a while. But I'd not pay much of a premium for a HDV camera.

Why isn't Hawaii & Alaska included in this promotion? Aren't we part of the US? What the hell? Or am I reading this wrong?

Mike Rehmus August 22nd, 2004 04:50 PM

Paradise always pays more! :-))

Michael Struthers August 23rd, 2004 01:20 AM

Anyone remember how long after they had rebates for the pd150 that the pd170 appeared?

Boyd Ostroff August 23rd, 2004 06:12 AM

Was there a rebate on the 150? I don't remember one....

Tommy Haupfear August 23rd, 2004 07:19 AM

Wow, the PD170 for $2699 at B&H after the Weva discount and mail-in rebate. That means you could get it and the Century Optics 16:9 adapter for a total of $3400. Not too shabby.

Mike Hanlon August 23rd, 2004 10:37 AM

Then you would have two adapters since the PD170 comes with Sony's best one.

Mike Rehmus August 23rd, 2004 10:42 AM

The sony comes with a WA, not the 16:9 adapter.

Mike Hanlon August 23rd, 2004 10:55 AM

Duh. I guees Evelyn Wood speed reading doesn't work on email.
