Pricing - not so good news

Amsterdam, Netherlands -- Broadcast-equipment giant Sony is using the IBC2007 show here to demonstrate a working version of the solid-state XDCAM camera that it introduced at the National Association of Broadcasters’ convention.

The new PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX compact camcorder will begin shipping in November at a list price of 6,500 euros ($8.875).

Come on US price! It has to be lower...

Peter Jefferson September 6th, 2007 01:01 PM

I don't doubt this price... considering a "lowly" stock XL H1 is $13k here in Aus... I wouldn't expect this to be much cheaper.

US price will be nowhere near US$8,875.

you cannot apply a simple exchange rate to a Euro price and get a relevant US$ price as they're two different markets. Evrything is far more expensive in Europe (except maybe wine!).

I would think US price will be maybe a little below $6k. Maybe US$5,800 something like that.

Considering this is an "universal" camera (both PAL and NTSC), I'd personally doubt the difference in price will be that huge. Everybody would import from the States.

Lucas Allen September 6th, 2007 01:23 PM

Didn't Sony promise that this cam would be under 8k????

Bill Pryor September 6th, 2007 01:26 PM

The price they've discussed has always been around $8K.

Oh i think it will be.

Problem is that you have to pay import duty if you bought it from USA and brought it to Europe.

Example : Z1 *streetprice* at competitive online UK sites is GBP4000 (includes tax). Thats US$8,100 !!

At well-known NYC stores it's US$4,700 ! thats 42% cheaper and the Z1 is 50i/60i so thats neo-universal. So this is just to illustrate these big differences.
OK maybe the EX1 won't be sub-US$6000 but i would be surprised if it's higher than about $6,500. So i'll speculate at $5,800 - $6,500 streetprice USA.

MAybe but i'm talking streetprices really, rather than MSRPs. It may be 8k MSRP, but i'd think streetprice will start with a "6"..

That sounds like phony "bait and switch" pricing to me. Given Sony's earlier estimate of $8K MSRP, I'd expect close to that in the US initially with discount pricing around $7500 after a few weeks and maybe $7K sometime next year. [Edit: never mind about the $4700 if that was for the Z1...]

Also note that the EX1 will reportedly come with one 16GB memory card, which offers 50 minutes of full-quality recording. An HVX200 with 32GB of memory for 32+ minutes of recording is at least $7K, so $7-8K is fair for the EX1.

Umm no, it's the official online price for a Z1U at a very well-known NYC store that was formerly a dvinfo sponsor. So it's legit.

Kevin Shaw September 6th, 2007 01:57 PM

My mistake, I thought you were talking about the EX1! :-(

But didn't someone say the original MSRP of the Z1U was also close to $8K MSRP in the US? If so then perhaps we can hope for the EX1 to eventually fall below $5K, just not at launch...
