My EX review - with loads of sample footage

I just posted my review of the XDcam EX. You can skip all the blabby bits, but I've posted a bunch of samples as well, with links to the original full-resolution XDCam files. So, if you're looking for sample footage to play with (assuming you've got FCP6 installed), you might want to take a look. I also posted 720p quicktimes and flash versions.

Anyways, let me know your thoughts:

Good review Colin, and great samples as well. Thanks

Well done -- thanks for sharing this with us,

Colin, not sure why, but when I try and download as target all of the footage is in " Mov " format... ???

but they do look good when played back ( a little nipply :-) )

thanks

.mov -- standard QuickTime file extension. Download the player at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

your killing me... :-)

yes, mov... apple...

I thought he was going to let us download the EX1 raw files.. mp4.. not mov??

from what I see, they are all Mov's... no mp4's there for us to play with.

OK, he just posted this on his blog....

"A few notes - Sorry I wasn't clear - The "XDCam Originals" were imported with the XDCam plugin for final cut pro, which wraps them in MOV (the video content itself doesn't change). I'll check tomorrow to see if I have the pre-rewrapped files around, otherwise I'll shoot some more and be sure to post those."

so I guess I'm not crazy after all... well maybe not :-0

Sorry, yeah, I was living in my Mac-centric world. The 'original' clips are what came out of the XDCam importer, which rewraps the video in MOV (doesn't recompress or anything). I forgot about the rest of you.

I'll be shooting more for the next day or two, and will post more *real* original footage then.

Thanks for taking the time to write your review and post clips, Colin! This camera definitely seems like the beast I've been waiting for.

My only question is, was it difficult to handhold for long periods of time?

Colin McFadden December 11th, 2007 11:11 PM

For me, I found that I was often bracing it against my shoulder blade. Because the grip can be rotated to exactly the angle you need, it's actually quite comfortable. I really, really appreciate how far forward the screen is when holding it like that.

Thanks for posting the clips, Colin. I just experimented with the shots of the kid walking in the snow, the diet coke and the studio set (all 1080p24), and added a couple of basic titles in FCP.

Then I exported thru compressor and made a 24p DVD in DVD Studio Pro. I must say it looks very clean!
