Hot & Cold - EX1 clips
 

Just a few clips I grabbed of some taps today, there's not much exciting about taps I know, but I really like some of the shots so thought I'd post it.

All shot with the EX1 at 720/25p over cranked to 50. I used a picture profile with CINE 1 gamma applied. There's a little bit of interval recording in there too. There is some magic bullet grading applied in post.

Thanks Steven. Yes, I wanted to try and give a cinematic feel to it, well as cinematic as a pair of dirty taps can be anyway :)

Using a matte this way is something I've wanted to mess around with for a while and I think it works well with the high quality images the EX1 produces.

Was this using a 35mm adapter, for the DOF?

Very nice. What lighting did you use? Handheld, tripod?

Nice look, Paul, and it is good to start seeing some Cine Gamma Curves applied at the recording point. It would be great to see some full resolution frames before and after Magic Bullet, just to see what the EX1 is producing with the curve applied. This footage is escaping the video look!

No adapters, all done with the stock lens. I used a single Dedolight and most of the footage was shot on a tripod other than the obviously shaky closeups.

I still haven't found the colour I'm looking for directly from the camera, but it handles grading in post so well that I'm quite happy to leave my options open and not mess too much with the capturing.

I will keep hunting though!

Paul, the frames look good straight out of the camera. I have seen some custom Gamma Curves for F900 and F23 that emulate the Cineon Log curve and some custom presets require a lot of post grading, yet preserve both shadow detail and contain highlight blow outs.

From the XDCam HD brochure, we can see how different the "Standard" curve compares to the Cine curves, and a lot more of your highlights would have shown a burnt out look with "Standard" curve.

I can't wait to do some comparative tests in a controlled lighting environment. Where art thou EX1 arrival... Paul, thanks for the post and subsequent frames uploaded.

Yeah, thanks a lot Phil... This is the sample clip that finally made me pick up the phone and order one of these to finally make the upgrade.

Phil Bloom's stuff is beautiful but I don't have the desire (or time) to learn the fine points of 35mm adapters or the money for film lenses.

Your Hot and Cold clip showed me how crisp the image is and also how shallow the depth of field can be with the stock lens.

You should ask Sony for my commission. Seriously, nice work.
