Sony PMW EX-1 Grading

How much grading can the EX-1 take? As it's XDCAM I'm worried about something that will fall apart during colour correction. Is this the case with this camera?

Also, how much better or worse is it than the Panasonic AG-HVX200? More or less noisy? Better or worse at colour correction?

Thanks a lot.

I think technically the panny will have a wider colour range to maniplulate as its has a higher colour space than the ex1 codec (4:2:2 vs 4:2:0), however i have done multiple layer colour grading with my ex1 footage and it stands up very well, also you should remember that the ex1 handles low light much better than the panny and with correct exposure noise/grain wont be a problem.

The EX1 is much more forgiving than my JVC HD110 when it comes to color grading in post. While the EX1 handles low light well, shadows are noisier than well lit areas. Underexposure does not recover well, from correction in post.

You can get 4:2:2 via HD-SDi out with the EX1. If you need that, then the option is definitely there.

I'm amazed at how far it can be pushed. As others state above, the noise becomes a factor before the codec artifacts, in global grading.

If you are doing selective grading using color keying, the blocky edge artifacts can bite you at the extremes - but still, it's all surprisingly good.
