Express Card SSD work with update 1.11
 

oK updated my cam to 1.11 purchased a Lexar 8gb EXPRESS CARD SSD put it in the Ex1 message Format card poped up. Formated the card recorded at SP and HQ modes complete. I do not know if I would try recording a paid job with the after market cards at HQ mode. The only problem is the Sony external card reader will not read the Lexar express card SSD had to use my laptop.

Brian do tell in detail.
Exactly which Lexar 8GB card.
Exactly what record mode settings did you use.
"laptop" Mac, Windows, card slot, OS?
Little things can make a BIG difference.
Did copy files with Clip Browser, test in your NLE (which one)?

2. Use windows Vista on my Hp Lap top with Express Card Slot
3. Copy to Clip Browser Exported to MXF file.
4. Shot SP mode 720 60p, 1080 30p and HQ mode 1080i did 2min clips
5. ok on Vegas 8b Time line
6. Plan to pick up a 16gb card later today will do more extensive testing tomr.

unfortunately, test on internet shows that the bigger the slower card.
so what is working with a 8 gig could fail with a 16 or for sure will fail with a 32.
(seems 32 gig card are pitifully slow).
real SSD drives or compact flash could be a better deal.

But given the price a bunch 8GB cards might be possible.

Brian, it might be worth a try of 720p24/60 overcrank slow motion.

Where do you get this from. I cannot speak for the Lexar SSD cards as the Lexar site does not list specs, but the Transcend ExpressCard/34 SSD cards are ALL LISTED as 8 MB/sec write speed. And the 35mb/s HQ mode is well within the write speed of the card.

I have never heard of higher capacity memory cards being slower than smaller ones. Fact is you buy your memory cards based on speed and both small and large capacity cards are availeble in high speed versions.

I'm thinking here... Could be possible to use those Expresscard to Compactflash Adapters, with a 266x speed rated CF. I've saw one adapter from Delkin that have a transfer rate of 40MB per second.

I don't have the EX1 yet, but someone could do the test to show us if this works...

OK GUYS BAD NEWS the Lexar SSD card is not fast enough to maintain the HQ 720 60P write speed from the cam for more than 4min Error message comes up restore media, select restore media still on card. The SP modes seem to be ok tried both 1080 24 1080 60i shot 20min on each mode with no problem.

I believe someone posted elsewhere that Juan Martinez said they basically found enough speed issues that Sony wasn't going to certify 3rd Party Cards. That doesn't mean a 3rd Party card wouldn't work if such manufacturer could hit the speed marks but I have hunch Sony did do their testing and generally wasn't happy with the results.

Did you mean 16 gig Lexar is ok when record in SP mode ?
SP mode is good enough at the moment until SxS cards big price drop in afew years time.


by the way, what is SP mode?

This is typical of compact flash media. Some manufacturers cards work well in some machines and some don't. It is very hard to test every card with every device but they do have differences which can cause issues.
I would stick with certified cards for the machine as you don't know at what point in the process a problem might show up

In SP mode the cam shoots HDV format 1440 x1080

I own (4) Sony SXS 16 gb cards

I will just use the after market cards as backup an only shoot SP MODE.
