720-60p vs. 720-30p overcranked
 

Can someone explain to me the difference between the following scenarios?

1. - Shooting 720-60p

2. - Shooting 720-30p overcranked to 60.

I know that in the first scenario, you can retain audio, where it is muted in the second. I also know that the data rate of the second is higher, thus preventing it from working with either the 60GB HD solution or the SDHC solution. What I'm after is this - When would option #2 be superior to option #1?

Well, one would be slow motion one wouldn't. Is that what you mean? Sorry for the obvious. :)

I think, if you playback from camera in 720/60P mode it'll be normal speed, whereas in 720/30P mode overcranked to 60 it'll play in slow motion straight from camera.

1. - Shooting 720-60p will play back as 60 progressive frames / second = 100% speed.

2. - Shooting 720-30p overcranked to 60.Will play back 30 progressive frames / second = 50% speed = slow motion.

But of course, you can still get slomo from the 720/60 stuff, you just do it in post, import it into a 30P timeline.
People like Alister Chapman will know better, but is there not a difference in the compression between normal and SQ modes, like one using constant bit rate and the other variable, and so one is preferable to the other?

Correct, shooting 720-30p overcranked to 60 will play back on your 30P timeline is slo-mo (in this case 1/2 speed).

You can slow down the 60P in post, but it will not look as good as the 30P overcranked 60FPS version.

The EX increases the datarate for overcrank. This allows it to maintain the full HQ (35mbps) datarate at normal playback.

I was never able to achieve slo-mo in post with such buttery-smooth (sorry, couldn't help it :) motion as I get with EX1 in-camera overcranking.

So yes, if you are after the quality slo-mo, by all means do it in-camera...

Thanks, I appreciate the responses. And I should have been more precise, I know that the the overcranked options is slo-mo, but since it only overcranks to 200% in 30p, it is essentially 60p. I didn't know if there was a benefit to using overcranking.

This makes sense, though. Sadly, it means that when using SDHC, shooting 720 60p isn't my solution for slo-mo. There are still benefits to SxS!
