EX1 Slowmotion & Timelapse
 

Hello Everyone,

I am the proud owner of the EX1. I have 3 questions:

1. In "Slow Motion" mode, I connot seem to find the correct frame rate for slow motion recording. I have tried between 20-30, but when I play the clip back, it is still real time.
I am shooting in the 1080/30p mode. What is the best frame rate to produce smooth slow motion playback?

2. In "Interval Recording" mode, what would be a good setting for fluid rolling clouds time lapse effects?

3. In "Interval Recording" mode, what would be a good setting to produce the "long Tail" effect with traffic car lights at night?

For slow motion you would have to use 720/30p or 720/24p which enables you to use the 60 frame setting. This setting is unavailable in 1080 for file size reasons.

Yes, slow-mo is 720 only.

For timelapse, 1 frame per second is a good start. You'll still probably end up speeding that up in post, but gives you flexibility. To get the long tail / streaking effect I've found that you need to use EX slow shutter at 16.

Correction:


You can not get slo-mo 1080 30P within the EX.
You can do it in post, but since it's recorded at 30P, it will only be just OK.

I believe a better solution is just go with 720 30P with overcrank.

For 720 30P:

Set the EX to 720 30P
Next, locate S&Q in the menu. Turn it on and set it to 60.

When you play back your video, it will be slo-mo half speed.

Also, please note that when you power off the camera, it turns off S&Q mode.
This is a safety feature in the event you forget it was still set to S&Q.

This is not the case. At 1080 data rate (storage, bandwidth, not sure of the right word)requirements are beyound the camera's ability.

Woops, you're right.
I meant 720 30P. But, I see Joel wrote 1080 30P.

Well, in this case, I'd switch to 720 30P for the overcrank, then back to 1080 30P when slo-mo is not needed.

This is my first posting. In reply to your third question check out EX1 on the M1 at Mach 2 on Vimeo simulating a motorway trip at twice the speed of sound.

I'm pretty sure most of us out here will use the slow shutter speed to mix it up with the interval recording to have a smooth fluid look. I'm using it that way. If you find it too bright, use a ND filter.

You have to spend some money and get the vortex DVD for the EX1, It really helps
