Strange White balance.

I did a shoot yesterday, did a white balance whilst using my on camera light, i had the 3200k filter on, so it was no surprise when i got a 3200k white balance, great, lovely picture, however, i also have a 3200k preset already stored on the same picture profile, so instead of using the (a) preset i'd just set i switched to the preset, however it was a different colour, the picture was very cold with the 3200k preset, definately not correct, i checked the screen, it did say 3200k. I switched back to the (a) 3200k and the picture was perfect.

Anyone know whay this is ?

Paul.

The "measured" WB differs substantially from that dialed-in; one takes care of your blue/magenta while the other does not.

Ah ok, i see.
I won't be using the 3200k preset anymore then for inside shooting.
My outdoors 5600k preset has always produced good results in daylight though.
I learned something new today.

Thanks Piotr.

I'm glad it's not just me!

I'm aware of some white-set differences, which seem to be a more intense version of what I experienced with the Z1, in that pre-set white balances can differ from white-set balances because of extra correction for 'dirty light' from fluorescents or coloured walls, for example.

With two Z1 cameras, I'd use a Tungsten preset 'minus 1' (so -6 steps from the daylight preset) even though it would be a little too warm and a tad too much green for stage lighting. With the EX1, I'm having to do a similar sort of thing with Picture Profiles, BUT I'm noticing a difference between cameras with identical settings.

I'd say it's the amount of green in a picture when I compare manual white set with the preset white from the PP menu, with an overall leaning towards blue compared to the Z1 style cameras. I am definitely getting a 'colder' look from the EX1 compared to the Z1, but it's not unpleasant. More DSR-570-like. But to be sure, I'd need to spend more time with the PP settings and if possible, playing with two cameras side by side.
