New XDCam Transfer 2.8. - sending clip back to camera
 

The new XDCam Transfer Plugin for FCP allows you to send edited sequences back to the EX1 onto the SxS card.
This works without a problem - but I just cant play the files back in the camera. They do not even show up there. I can only see that they are on the SxS card when opening the card in the file browser. I used one of the presets for exports - so this cant be the problem.
Does anybody know if it would theoretically be possible to play back the clips on the camera? If it is not possible then this new feature does not make much sense for me?

My guess would be to switch the camera in recording mode; it should then ask you for permission to conform the card. Did you try it?

yes I tried - but it did not ask for any permission to confirm the card.
The file (.mp4) is stored in the clips folder in the BPAV - but no other info was written to the card.

Instead of writing the file to the camera write the MP4 file to your hard drive. Then open clip browser and go "file" "import" and navigate to the MP4 file and import it. Then copy the MP4 to the camera using the clip browser. Doing this will create the XML files that are needed by the camera for playback.

It's a bit long winded but it works.

If you own a macbook pro with the expresscard reader.
I have been told that you can just insert the s x s card into the expresscard slot.
Drag the BVAP file directly to the s x s card.
Perhaps that was on the Vortex media DVD.

BVAP is not a sequence unfortunately. So this does not answer your question.
i would be surprised if the camera recognized anything but BVAP files.

The problem is that the transfer tool only makes the MP4 file, you need to use the clip browser to make all the other files you need. Once you have all the files in a BPAV folder then you can just drag that to the card either in the slot on a MBP or to the camera via USB. At least us Mac users have a way to get edited footage back to the camera if we need to.

So this new function of the 2.8 software is pretty useless isn´t it?

I am able to write clips directly from FCP to SxS cards in the camera over USB. I just go "File", "Export", "Sony XDCAM" and set the source to the SxS card in the camera, set the format to MP4 and use the appropriate one of the EX presets. When i disconnect the camera it asks to restore the media which I do and the clip then plays back correctly in the camera.

I don't have a MacBook pro so I can't test to see what happens writing directly to a SxS card in the express card slot.

So no it's not worthless, it's actually a really nice feature.

it works exactly the same on my camera but it does not ask to restore media and I cant play the exported clip in the camera... Strange...

I have just tested the workflow with the export from Clipbrowser and this works fine for me...

Try recording a short clip on the camera before writing the file to the camera. I have not tried it with a blank card, perhaps you need to already have the BPAV folder etc on the card. Recording a short clip would create the BPAV folder and XML files.

You need Intel to run Clip Browser.

I had it wrong.

Downloaded 2.8 from Sony - installed and restarted the Mac.

Set in and out points on my FCP timeline.

File > Sony XDCAM

Chose: (Blank) Untitled SxS card (in my SBAC US10 reader).

Chose Format: MP4 (XDCAM EX)

Chose Settings: (XDCAM EX 1080p25)

Hit the Export button.

Export Complete - Replaced Card in EX1 and Set it in VTR mode.
Restored Media.

Clip appeared in LCD - hit play . . .

IT WORKS!

Hi All

I own an EX3 and tried your workflow, it all worked apart from the Ex3 didn't ask me to "restore media", so I had to do it manually using "UPDATE MEDIA" under the camera menu. This also meant that I don't have to format the card every time I want to add another clip, I just use the "UDATE MEDIA" option.
