DM-Accessories - VCT-WEDGE Mount for VCT Quick Release Mounts

anyone have this? does it work well?

I have two of the DM wedge plates for my two camera's. I choose the DM-Accessories product build because it has the additional rails on each side of the wedge, the whole wedge/rails plate slides perfectly into the VCT-U14 base. It snaps into place and fits with no play/movement what so ever. The workmanship is first rate and I am very happy with them. Cheers!

Does it not need some sort of receiver for the rear of the camera?

Ideally, it would have one, if you mean for the rear guide pin on most wedge style quick release bases. I intend to make one for those that must have that, I just haven't managed to do it yet. Most customers seem to be content with just the wedge end.

So I'd just attach my Vinten tripod plate to a Sony VCT-U14 base and keep it on the tripod. The attach the wedge to the camera. Is that configuration going to be more solid than my Vinten plate alone, or just quicker on and off the camera?

Sorry, having never personally used anything Vinten, I really don't know if it is more solid. The wedge system is a nice quick assemble / release system though.
