60Hz shooting in a 50Hz country

I am currently on assignmnet in Chile and thought I would share my findings for shooting flicker free at 1080 30P in a 50Hz lighting environment.

The best results seem to be to shoot with flicker reduction on and set to 60Hz and the shutter at 50Hz. All of this while shooting at NTSC 1080 30P, my preferred shooting format. I detect no flicker with these settings.

The EX3 manual is very limited in its description of this cure so I thought I would share.

Flicker reduction should be set to the frequency of the mains electrical system, so for chile it should be set to 50Hz. The reason you are not getting flicker will be because you have the shutter set to 50Hz.

Settings tried:

1. 1080 30P, 1/60, flicker reduction 50, did not work
2. 1080 30P, shutter off, flicker reduction 50, did not work
3. 1080 30P, shutter off, flicker reduction off, did not work
4. 1080 30P, 1/50, flicker reduction off, slight reduction
5. 1080 30P, 1/50, flicker reduction 50, slight reduction
6. 1080 30P, 1/50, flicker reduction 60, WTH? it worked!

So I used what worked despite what SHOULD have worked.

Same deal in India. 50p and problem solved.

50P? How do you set an EX1/3 to 50P?

You choose PAL Area in the Others menu, then you get different frame rate options.

Oh I know you can get PAL settings, but I was talking about using 1080 30P for North America productions and getting 50Hz lighting to not flicker. Going to PAL and 720 50P is not an option. Seeing as I was talking about 1080, I assumed there was something I was missing when 50P was mentioned in that it was available in 1080.
