Sound settings for mics?
 

Hi again oh knowledgeable ones!

Just purchased the Rode NTG-3 mic complete with boom.

Never used a mic setup with the EX1 before and was wondering if any of you guys could give me some tips for setting up the sound for both indoor and outdoor shoots.

I do not have a mixer so it's just a boom set up. Any particular settings I should use within the EX1 menus?

I leave the menu settings in the default positions. If you agree with the default menu positions, then all you have to worry about is the controls on the outside of the camera itself, and they are all fairly straight forward. Recording good audio is often the most overlooked apect of filmmaking. Although I am not familiar with your new mic, I did a little research on it and it appears that you purchased an excellent microphone. The 2 primary factors in obtaining good voice recordings are (1) boomy & noisy rooms can be difficult to overcome, and turn off the air conditioning when possible, and even a refrigerator if it is a problem. (2) get the mic as close to the person's mouth as possible. this may sound like strange advice, but you might be surprised how many people do not do this simple task. I always place the tip of my Schoeps mic about 3 inches from the top of the frame. And I zoom to my largest and smallest framing to make sure the boom is out of both frames.

My audio settings remain the same for both indoor and outdoor audio recording.

You made a wise decision in going with a shotgun mic. It is much superior to lavalier mics. Most people are too lazy to mess with a shotgun, but you will be glad you did.
