EX3 Component Out

I've recently purchased the SmallHD monitor for a field monitor for my EX3. I am feeding with component video because it does not (yet) have HD-SDI in. 720p footage looks beautiful on it - like liquid. However, 1080 not so much - some artifacts and noise in the image. I asked them about it and they suggested testing with a different source to determine the monitor as the culprit. The test, using HDMI and 1080p, proved the monitor was again flawless and the issue seems to be with the component output of the EX3 - or the cable itself.

Obviously, 1080p requires much more bandwidth than does 720p. It seems to me that the Sony included cable, the mini-component connector on the camera, or the electronics in the component output cannot handle it. Does anyone know if there is another option I could try in regard to the cable? I'm surprised that Sony would include a cable that that would make the image appear degraded.

Has anyone else tried this and gotten different results? Should I consider having my camera serviced?

Thanks,

I use the HD component and HD-SDI out. They are identical on my monitors.

I have 5 HD monitors I use a JVC DT-V20L3DU, A 7"marshall and a number of consumer Plasma and LCD's.

Th JVC is really accurate and there is no perceptual difference 24p, PAL, 60i it displays all formats. I can A/B component and SDI they are identical.

If you have a monitor that converts 1080 to 720 or something else it may introduce artifacts.

Take your camera to a real 1080 pro evaluation monitor and do a/b comparisons. If the results are not like mine, Then there is something wrong with your cable or camera.

Have the dealer you bought camera from do this. This is when it helps to buy from a brick and mortar dealer not a website.

I hope this helps.

Dave Morrison was bad enough, now I have to get grief for buying over the internet from you too? ;-)

Great advice, I'll have to find a pro eval monitor and try both inputs. It would be great if just a new cable, or even sending the camera in for service, would solve the problem.

Thanks, Olof.
