Subbing for the PHU hard drive system?

So I can't find my PHU-60K Hard Drive and I can't even begin to think where it may be since it's been a while since I've used it. I DO still have the cable that connects it to the SxS slot on the camera.. what I'm wondering is: does the PHU system have specially written software in order for it to record the footage? I ask this because when I hook it up to my computer it recognizes it just like any other external storage device. SO, my question is, would it be possible to record to my MyBook external drive? The SxS cable has a USB connector on the opposite end which the MyBook drive would use.

My guess is that Sony equipped the PHU with special software for it to record footage... but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks!

There are many adaptors that allow recording to SDHC cards so obviously there's nothing "Sony special."

As Clint Eastwood used to say, "Do you feel lucky?" while pointing his .357 at his latest catch.

Sony uses FAT32 formatted disks and so are the SDHC when formatted in the EX. I use NOTHING on a professional shoot without VERY THOROUGH testing in advance.
