Sony PMW-EX3 Picture Profiles

It's been suggested, in the thread below, that we start a new thread to cover specifically EX3 picture profiles:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-xdc...ml#post1477807

So, please post any EX3 picture profiles on this new thread. Let's hope we get an active participation and thanks in advance to all who share their knowledge and settings in this complex area. I confess I'm no expert in this EX3 picture profile area but would love to learn more, as I'm sure many of us would.

There are a lot of people out there with EX3s so what are you using and why?

Note that a (very long) thread already exists specifically regarding EX1 picture profiles. Any EX1 information should be posted in that, linked below:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-xdc...e-recipes.html

I'd also suggest someone who owns a EX1r perhaps starts a similar thread regarding that model line? (Mods, feel free to rearrange these suggestions as you see fit).

I think this thread is ill advised. The cameras are the same. Splitting PP advice into two threads will just make it harder to find information.

I second Doug; the individual PP settings are the same for the (original) EX1 and the EX3. Due to some additional hardware differences, the only incompatibility boils down to the fact that you cannot save the EX1 settings in a setup.suf file, and load them into an EX3 (or vice versa). Considering most people posted individual settings rather than complete setting files anyway, keeping everything in a single thread will bring much less confusion than splitting it into 2 separate threads would.

OK, no problem with that. Pity it took half a day to read that thread though!

Greg Chisholm January 27th, 2010 03:28 PM

Yeah but...

think of all the knowledge, from all over the world, you absorbed in that half day. It will probably pay dividends down the road :)

Andy Wilkinson January 27th, 2010 03:53 PM

Let's hope so - good here isn't it! :-)

I'm also learning a ton of FANTASTIC info from this thread started by Alister Chapman a few days ago. Although it's specifically aimed at Picture Profiles on the PMW-350, Alister's clear informative writing (and others so far) is a definite "must read" for anyone interested in learning more generally about this complex subject.

big believer!

i couldn't agree with you more. sometimes info that can be helpful creeps up in the most unsuspecting places.

i was looking for some help with apple's "motion" and checked out the adobe "after effects" tutorials... practical application is one thing but the basic principles of motion graphics and theory go along way. the next time i launched "motion" it made alot more sense.

My wife always asks me why i read what i do... how will i use that? :)

I was told numerous times that the picture profiles for the EX1 do not work for the EX3? I was told the settings work differently for the 2 cameras (ie EX1 PP do not produce the same results on the EX3), is this incorrect info?

Andy Wilkinson January 28th, 2010 02:32 AM

Likewise - and including information I was told by Sony directly, specifically that the EX1 and EX3 have a slightly different colour space, including how they handle the IR. Hence why it was suggested I start this thread as that would suggest picture profile settings need to be slightly different to achieve the same end results.

However, Doug has said (above) that the EX1 and EX3 they are exactly the same.

Maybe some one with both cameras could do a test and resolve this issue...

Greg Chisholm January 28th, 2010 06:41 PM

the profiles are the same but the file structure (firmware) is not.... so you cannot load the files from an ex1 to a ex3 or vice versa. if you could exchange files between cams the settings would be the same.

Ed Kukla January 29th, 2010 12:55 AM

"if you could exchange files between cams"

Would entering the values set on one camera to the PP on the other camera work? Manual value entries

Anthony McErlean January 30th, 2010 06:26 AM

So, is this the end of the EX3 PP thread, it didnt last long :)

there SHOULD be no difference if you loaded up them manually.

As far as this thread "being dead" is concerned... I personally think if you investigate the pp thread for the ex1, that should suffice.

Greg
