Both cameras record to 4:2:0, however the EX1/EX1r can output 4:4:2 via its SDI connector.

Yes there is the NanoFlash unit. There's lots of people on here who are big fans who I'm sure will be along in a moment. Personally I don't have a need for one so can't really comment.

I made a typo.

They are actually 4:2:0 for internal recording but the EX1 can output 4:2:2 via SDI. Apologies.

Just for clarification...

Color subsample is the spec you are seeking... and it refers to the three values...the Y' sample, the horizontal color difference sample (Cr and Cb), and the third number is the vertical color difference sample (also Cr and Cb) and the third number is either the same as the second, indicating no vertical subsample, or zero, indicating a half vertical subsample.

DV NTSC is 4:1:1, which means a full Y' sample of 720x480, a 1/4 horizontal color difference sample (indicated by the middle number "1") of 180x480, and since the third number is also "1", it indicates no further subsample vertically.

MPEG2 for a NTSC DVD is 4:2:0...full Y' sample of 720x480, a 1/2 horizontal color difference sample of 360x480, which is further subsampled by half vertically (indicated by the "0"), to 360x240.

In the case of a designation with four numbers, like "4:2:2:4", the fourth number is the alpha channel.

Color "depth" is typically a term used by people when they are referring to color precision. Most acquisition codecs are 8 bit, which have 256 possible values in each color channel. There are a couple 10 bit acquisition formats like AVC-Intra from Panasonic or ProRes on the KiPro device from AJA. 10 bit precision doubles the precision twice (each bit adds an "on-off" state, doubling the possible values), creating 1024 possible values and increasing color precision significantly.

The EX1 records hi definition video at 8 bit precision, 4:2:0 color subsample, MPEG2. 4:2:2, uncompressed is what comes out of the HDSDI output (technically the serial digital format would support 10 bit, but I'm not really certain what the camera is putting out...8 or 10 bit.). There are several external recorders that will take the HDSDI feed from the camera...NanoFlash, AJA KiPro, CineDeck, and others... They use various recording formats and compression techniques, and have data rates that can vary widely, as can the associated post production workflows.

According to Convergent Design, the HDSDI o/p of the EX cameras is 10 bit 4:2:2, and yes, the nanoflash is a superb 8 bit 4:2:2 recorder that hooks up to the HDSDI o/p of the EX camera as well as HDMI output from such equipped cameras.
