Ex1r or ex3

Need a second camera, which one to get?
I prefer the ex3 because of the feel and better connectors,
but in terms of image and such which one is preferable?

Andy Shipsides October 28th, 2010 08:43 PM

Image wise they are exactly the same. If it is your second camera you may want the EX3 though, so you can lock timecode between the two for a two camera shoot.

Does the EX1R still have the IR issue?

Robert Young October 29th, 2010 12:35 AM

Supposedly less so, but still a little controversy about it.
Do a search on this forum and you'll find threads about it.

Boris,

1. If you do a lot of outdoor shooting in the bright sunshine in your country for sure go for the EX3 - the viewfinder arrangement is excellent*.
2. If you do a lot of travel (especially airline travel) with your camera go for an EX1r - it really is a lot easier to get into the carry on bins.
3. If IR is a concern, consider the new Canon XFs, but be aware that in low light the EXs have the edge (in my view, from what I've seen).

* Note - Even if you go for the EX1r or XF you might want to consider something like this - it'll still no way be as good as the real EX3 system (in my view) but some swear they work well.

There may be the odd snippet of information in my personal review of the EX3 which might help you too.

Hope this helps!

Boris,

What is your first camera? If you already have an EX3 then I'd probably go for the EX1r.

I however prefer the ergonomics of the EX3 and have Olaf's shoulder mount system which really makes it great for off tripod shots. I agree with Andy that the viewfinder on the EX3 is very good and I've got an lcd monitor for when I'm on sticks or director view.

Got the ex3 - nice, need to learn it.
One thing though is annoying - not possible to change white balance preset. e.g CC filter/button.
First small test.

You can change the WB preset value via the Picture Profile menus.
