PMW500 setting 23.98 PSF or pull down

What are the pro,s and cons of either one of these settings..

Thanks

I assume you're talking about your monitor output...
Some (usually cheaper) monitors don't like 23.98, and require 60i signal to display an image.
Conversely, some external recorders don't like to convert from pull-down to progressive 23.98 recording, so that's a reason to set the output to 23.98. You should hook up all your accessories and see what works best.

Re: PMW500 setting 23.98 PSF or pull down

If you're outputting to an external recorder, PSF may be better since it's pseudo progressive scan. Pull-down encodes a 2:3 pulldown of 23.98 into a 59.94i stream. This is not recommended for post-production if you don't have a recorder that can do reverse pulldown.

For Monitoring only, Pulldown increases compatibility with monitors since not all monitors recognize PSF.

So, if you have a external recorder, PSF is a better option. But for strictly monitoring, pull-down will increase compatibility with more monitors. If your monitor supports PSF and a refresh rate that is 23.98, PSF is your choice hands down.

All depends on the equipment you have.

Re: PMW500 setting 23.98 PSF or pull down

Thanks guys

Its an internal setting in the 500,to be recorded onto the SXS cards internally.

My monitor is fine with both.. I presumed it was a post production concern.. one being better than the other for some reasons.. rather than just a monitor viewing problem..?

So this setting in the input/output menu is only for signal to a monitor..

It's for recording devices too. PSF is more beneficial for recording devices over pull down. Using pull down will complicate post production if you're recording externally.

Re: PMW500 setting 23.98 PSF or pull down

Thanks Jack

The setting either PSF or pulldown is only in the input/output settings.. in format in NTSC mode there is just the choice 23.98p .. not sure if that is PSF or not be ing recorded onto the internal SXS cards.

Still can't get a picture on my 9 inch pana BT LCD from video out in any frame rate.. is it only SD..?

Thanks again
