Recover SxS cards
 

I recently formatted my SxS card and realized that the movies taken by my Sony EX1 are totally lost without having them backed up. I tried couple hard drive and card rescue software but they seem useless. Does any body know how to recover my lost MPEG4 movies?

I heard about Bycloud SxS card rescue. Have anybody ever tried that? They say only the full version works but the trial doesn't.

I believe,if you haven't recorded over them,you can send them to Sony who can work some magic to try to get footage off them..

One of the best tools to use is Disk Doctor Photo Recovery for the Mac and PC. Many users have reported successful recovery of XDCAM files using this software.

On a PC many XDCAM users have reported success using Arax Disk Doctor Recover Files and Folders with ARAX Disk Doctor Recovery Wizard to recover the mp4 files.

Once you have recovered the mp4 files you should use Sony’s XDCAM browser to “import” the files into a new folder. This will recreate the necessary BPAV folder and correct file structure so that you can use the files.

I called Sony support and the answer is very disappointed. They said that there is no success recovering SxS cards that are formatted by cameras. Should that be the end of discussion yet? any hope for this?

Try the free versions of software tools listed above and see if they can recover any files for you. The free version will tell you if it can find any files and recover them. To perform the recovery, then you must purchase the software.

Normally formatting the card does not destroy the data on it. Even when formatted in camera the data remains. I am very surprised Sony told you this. There have been many people that have recovered data from a formatted card using Disk Doctor. Normal fast formatting simply resets the file allocation table.

You would have to write to every sector on the card to fully erase it and this takes several minutes even for a small card.

Hello Kent,

Despite what said Sony lots of people have recovered their footage from a formatted SxS card.
As Alister suggests in the last post it's a process that could take quite time but there's still some hope to bring back the files.

My suggestion would be to ask to a professional repair service like Aero Quartet: Video Apps and Repair Service to take a look. Using our free (Mac) diagnostic tool Treasured you could retrieve those formatted files and even get some previews. Best of luck!

Javier: as the owner or an employee of Aero Quartet you should really declare this instead of just promoting your own company every time someone else offers different options. It shouldn't be "their free tool" it should be "our free tool" after all you do work for them.

Alister: Thank you very much for being straight forward. So you pretty sure that Disc doctor can do it. I have tried one called Byclouder software they claim that they can do it but I have spent $99 for the software called SxS card data recovery for nothing. They (Byclouder) then suggest me to buy another app called "beclouded partition recovery Pro to fix the cards first before rescue the files but I doubt it. May be they just try to rip me off (the company is from UK and Im from US).

Kent: All details about Aero Quartet service are fully explained in the How it Works section. To bring back the data from the SxS card you would need to download Treasured and start a card scan using the DeepMediaScan function. All of these operations are free. Lots of people that I know have recovered data with Disk Doctor from formatted SxS cards.

Using Disk Doctor, I was able to recover many files from an accidentally reformatted SD card (used with an SxS adapter in a EX3). But when I try to import using XDcam EX Clip Browser the program tells me "Failed to Import clip" but no other info. Any idea what the problem is?

Assuming that when you say 'many' files you are indicating that not all the files were recovered? So presumably you no longer have a complete and intact BPAV file structure -- which would be my guess as to why clip browser isn't seeing things properly. In certain cases you can actually rebuild a complete BPAV file structure by importing the .MP4 files in clip browser, bu my guess is that you just want to have access to the files and be able to deliver/edit them.

I'm also assuming you've made a backup of whatever you recovered to a couple of different hard drives. If you haven't, you should do so before you start working with the files!!!
Have you tried playing the .MP4 files with a player (such as VLC)? The first thing to check is what can be played (and what can't.)
Many edit systems will read the .MP4 files directly. If not, use a program that opens it properly to transcode the files to something you can edit with.

BTW - none of this will work once you record new footage to the card. In that case you might be able to recover some of the data, but as you record more and more you overwrite any existing data on the card.

I once had a ATP SD card that went bad on me at a shoot and aero quartet saved my bacon - I could recover the files with other software but the .mp4s would not play back correctly as the structure (header etc) had been damaged.

This is the instance where you need more sophisticated recovery software like AQ. If you can recover your BPAV file structure with standard tools you shouldn't need it.
