Color correction test with Sony F3 native XDCAM files

This test is simply to show how the Sony F3 XDCAM 4:2:0 files handle normal color correction

The files were imported and color corrected within Final Cut Pro. This was not a push and pull test to break the image, this was a true real world color correction test of the XDCAM native footage from the F3.

Apple Color was not used for a reason, this was to show what can be done within Final Cut Pro and the 4:2:0 color space for the XDCAM files.

The color correction was a custom look, not based on anything but the original file.

There are 2 exported options that I posted for you to download: First was with ProRes 422 HQ 1920x1080 23.98p MOV file. Second was an Image Sequence exported from Final Cut Pro, at JPG2000 quality, settings on max quality.

The Image Sequence file had to be limited in size due to the very high data rate you'd need to download the whole test. So I picked a spot in the test that had the most movement on the color corrected images. Though a lot of the images will have motion blur this will show you how the XDCAM 4:2:0 codec handles the motion with a color correction pass over it. I exported the Image Sequence as a ZIP file, you can download and un-zip the file. You can use your standard picture viewing software to look at the exported pictures individually or use QuickTime and select File>Open Image Sequence then select the first image in the folder to play the full sequence back. Unless you have a powerful computer this will play back choppy. You can just view frame by frame if you like.

Again this test was not to break the codec, it was a real world test under average conditions that would use the XDCAM codec.

The lens used was the new Sony 50mm PL mount Prime. T stop unknown but looks like T2 or T2.8.

The files are very large, the mov file is 461MB and the zip is 71MB

My server may be slow depending on how many people are downloading at the same time. Please respect the downloads and do not redistribute these links. I am only posting these for the DVINFO.net members and DVXUSER.com members.

If posting files somewhere else please provide credit for Alister Chapman for the original footage content, and Giuseppe Pugliese & NewYorkFilmStudios.com for the color correction test and exported files.

I will be doing more tests on other native footage, and will be posting online. Will also be doing tests on 10bit 422 footage from the HD-SDI out as well.

Here is a JPG2000 file out of the Image Sequence: again exported as 24p 1920x1080 max resolution. This file is 2.1MB. As you can see the JPG2000 files are much more accurate. They match our screens perfectly. From the Image Sequence, I would feel confident in projecting this at 2k resolution. The image sharpness could be a litter higher, but I have a feeling thats due to the camera being slightly out of focus and wide open. A stopped down lens will surely provide a much sharper image.

Please right click link and select "save as".
