"Memo" Music Video Screengrabs

Hey guys,

I know the F3 has been useless and obsolete ever since the F5/F55 dropped, not to mention worthless (just check out what they're going for 2nd hand at the moment!). But I figured I'd point out that with a lot of hard work, you can just about coax a bearable image of it.

And as a sucker who has only just bought into this ancient piece of technology, I figured I'd post a few preliminary grades from my first shoot (and first music video shoot) with my very own F3...

Any suggestions on the grades would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Looks great.

The yellow/organge shots are real warm, like very tungsten. Does that match the motivation of what's going on in the actual music or performance?

I like to play with cooler colors sometimes, but it should fit the overall mood.

Harsh words for the camera. It's far from obsolete and hardly useless, and I seriously doubt the image is that far off from the new cameras.

What are you using to grade? I think there is a couple of grading steps that can take the videoish look out of your shots and make it look a bit more filmic. :)

The song moves between more upbeat, clubby verses at the start and more thoughtful, reflective verses towards the end, the warmer shots are built around those more intimate, reflective verses.

We have a few more shots to do which will involve a pretty big city skyline at night, I'm thinking of lighting those shots a bit cooler to create some contrast.

They're intended as tongue-in-cheek rather than harsh words Richard :)

Preliminary grade is just in FCP. Could you explain the 'video-ish' aspects you're seeing and the steps you'd take to avoid them?

Cheers

The year: 2016

Humanity has lost its ability to recognize sarcasm or irony without smily/winky faced icons.

This is the story of a nuclear holocaust triggered by the unfortunate omission of a smiley face in a text from American President Kardashian to the Prime Minister of Pipelinestan.

Well, after some grading/rendering nightmares that forced me to put in an order for a new computer to replace my trusty 5 year old Mac Pro yesterday (who knew Final Cut Pro had a Blue-Render-Of-Death?!); and swear a blood oath to myself to only grade things in Resolve from this point forward; I'm pleased to present my first music video, 'Memo':
