FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
I haven't bought the camera yet (still waiting for them to ship) but have been asked by potential client to provide 4K 10 bit.
I've just read the thread about monitoring being crippled when connected to external recorder via either SDI or HDMI. I presume this is still the case, and that we don't yet know if/when Sony will resolve. If they do resolve, which recorder would you recommend (I would use very rarely, so price a consideration) Also, anyone filmed in 4K with kit lens? Any issues quality wise? Thanks in advance! |
Re: FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
The HDMI output is 8-bit 422 UHD. There may be an option to get 10-bit with a future (paid) RAW upgrade, but right now, sounds like a job for the FS7.

Re: FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
No FS7 available I'm afraid. Has Sony mentioned a date when the RAW upgrade might be available?

No date or price yet from Sony.

Re: FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
I love the fs5 but if you need 4k 10bit I really don't think its the one for you... even after the paid update you will need a recorder to get at it ($1200-$3500) that puts the purchase cost and rental cost up with the fs7... and once your rigged and wired to a recorder its going to be larger and much more "clunky" than an fs7
Recorder, if price is a major consideration the Atoms Shogun is worth checking out... you give up some a fair amount to the Odyssey 7q+ mainly only 30 fps in 4k but it comes out to be half the price once you factor in some media costs and the extra software you need for the 7q (all based on what you get from the FS7 and FS700.... for all we know Sony may cripple the fs5 and who knows the upgrade might be $100 or $1000) The internal HD on the FS5 is pretty amazing, hard to believe the files are so small. I really like the internal 4k (UHD) but its 8 bit and very small file size.. for me its really good consumer UHD (think less noise and better color than the GH4 not over sharpened and has more DR than the Samsung NX1... its going to compare to this type cameras in UHD not the bigger Sony cameras with robust 4k codecs) Quote:

Re: FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
My break and butter is news and docs - HD 50 Mbps 10 bit is perfect. Size/weight of the FS5 is right (I played around with a FS7 the other day and it wouldn't work as well for what I do)
However, I've just had a conversation with a potential client who want 10 bit UHD. It'd be a 4 day shoot to help them build up their archive. Sounds like work arounds (if/when possible) could be prohibitively expensive. Appreciate the feedback. |
Re: FS5 4K 10 bit Recording
An FS700 + Shogun is pretty much the cheapest way to get 4K 10bit 422. But then only up to 30p.
That would be about the same price as a FS5, I believe. |

i thought uhd on the fs5 was limited to 420/8bit. (perhaps that is the internal recording uhd specs?) thanks in advance. be well. rob smalltalk.media/nyc |
