The 70-200 f2.8 lens
 

I just had two shoots that used a 70-200 f2.8 lens.
One was with my FS5 and a Canon lens with a Metabones adapter. The other was with an FS7 & A7S II with a Sigma lens, also with a Metabones adapter.

Man, I love these lenses! The images you can get are astonishing. I may have to splurge on a used Tamron or Sigma A-mount 70-200. The new ones are just too expensive.

The question is, I have a Sony LE-AE1 A-mount adapter. I think these lenses are for full frame sensors. Will I need more than the AE1? The lenses gave great images on the FS5 and FS7.

Anybody else use a 70-200 f2.8?

Well, I just bought a used Tamron. Let's hope it's as good as I hope it will be.

Have used the Alpha mount Sigma - but used the LA-EA2 adapter with it Producer's rig. I was initially skeptical, but found it did a pretty decent job when I tried auto-focus with it -- or at least I think it dd better than I would have manually - shooting a skater (Johnny Weir) on an exterior skating rink at night - basically staying at a 3.5 and zooming between 110mm and 200mm as he put on a show.

But you asked about the LA-EA1 -- which I haven't used with it, so I can't comment. I think that the LA-EA2 was a bit better with auto-focus...

For my kit I ended up with an older Nikon 80-200/2.8 -- and I absolutely love the image. Though of course I use it completely manual

I also use the old Nikon 80-200mm lens. It is a nice lens. The only lens that I use with OSS or auto focus ( Don't use that feature) is the 18-105 which becomes a 200mm lens with clear scan. The 80-200 is a nice interview lens or can be used at events. I use it with a rail system and lens support.

I've used my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 on my FS5. But it's not very user friendly. First you need to add grip/support because of the weight. Then once it's on, everything is manual. Because I do a fair amount of run and gun/RnG, that's just too much hassle. Which is why I recently ended up getting a SELP18200.

I've only had it a few days, but was pleased with some wildlife test shots I did yesterday. Very crisp and 95% of the time everything was in focus. And although most clips were shot at the tight end, it was handy to come out to 18mm. In future RnG projects that will be invaluable for getting establishing/contextualising shots.

But obviously it's not a fast lens (f3.5-6.3). So I'll use it mostly for external RnG and swap to my Nikon 70-200mm for indoor stuff with controlled lighting/distances, eg conferences. Distance being the main limiting factor of 70-200mm's, ie nothing too close.

Here's a few shots from the SELP18200 taken over the weekend:
Whilst my Nikon 70-200mm is undoubtedly the better lens, it wouldn't have delivered those wider shots. Plus by the time clips are compressed by Premiere and Vimeo I doubt you would spot much of a 'general' quality difference. I admit that's not true everywhere though, eg bokeh, colour.
