Avid Codecs not very good.

About 2 months ago...we had many back and forth conversations with Sound Devices. We shoot Avid DnXHD 180 and 220. We were noticing that in the blacks there was alot ...and I mean visually ...alot....of MPEG looking 'blocking'.

sent test files to them...and ultimately they agreed they have a problem with the codec. ??? Huh. So...don't you just license it from Avid ? Bottomline...we had to switch to ProRes and now our workflow into Avid is slower due to the wrapper.....

Anyone else have this issue ? Sound Devices says it's not sure if they can fix it. I saw a new firmware candidate available...but no mention of the DnXHD codec issues.

thx.

What did they say explicitly?

Not very much ! They admitted that they have 'issues' with the DNxHD codec. The real problem is with certain scenes...footage looks ok. But scenes with gray or black....suddenly mpeg looking blocky video become VERY noticable. Like it's set to 10mbps !!!

Since then...we have been shooting with ProRes 100. Just takes longer to ingest into Avid MC7.

Other than that...I've heard nothing about it. Bummed.

Ouch. I know this is an old thread so I feel a little wrong for bumping it, but has this ever been resolved? Does any other recorder with DNxHD QT modes exhibit this issue?

Bumpity bump.

Just learned the AJA Ki Pro Rack recorder without the artifacting issue only records to HFS... Boo. So did this "artifacting" issue ever get resolved? Cause a FFmpeg rewrap could be all that's needed to fix compliance issues.
