Home built steadycam discussion

Alright, so recently I've been in need of a stabilizer. After building my crane, I thought I would take a shot at building my own steadycam. Today I have just finished drawing my plans. However, I am not sure of the dementions.

Below is a link to the site (www.homebuiltstabilizers.com) where I got most of my plans.

My question is, how long should the individual sections of the arm be? Looks like about 9 inches..How long should the pole be that holds both the camera platform and the battery sled?

Anyone have any experience?

Google the glidecam pro 4000. Lots of specs on how long that one is but the pole extends and shortens to adjust the weight.

The problem Ive seen with homebuilt ones is the gimple is poor, infact one on youtube had a solid gimble and used your wrist as the shockabsorber (ouch!). Needless to say it showed, couldnt tell if it was handheld or on his DIY glidecam.

Hey Terry, why did you not just search the HBS forums for those answers? They have been posted on that forum many times over. I see you been there and checked out the main site but you neglect to check out the forum...;)

Partly because I'm faithful to DVI...but not that I'm biased toward HBS. I honestly didn't think about it....but thank you for bringing it to my attention.

No big deal..I'm just thinking it would have been much easier to search on a place dedicated to building stabilizers. ;) But eh,,,no worries...

Well well...I hope you did not do it because you wanted to make me feel good...;) I'm glad you did anywhere regardless of your purpose. Hope to see you on the forums...:)

Well, it's that odd to find me on HBS...after all, it's almost a part of my life...;)
Welcome aboard.
