Spring on male socket block...Charles P.?
 

I've been wondering about the small spring attached to the male part of the socket block. on the arm. What real role does it play and is it really necessary?

Charles, I knew at one time and I've forgotten. You might want to try posting that question over at the Steadicam forum--there's quite a few guys there who have all the mechanical answers!
