Worth upgrading from F717 to Canon Digital Rebel?
 

I'm currently shooting with a Sony F717 and have been thinking about upgrading to the Canon Digital Rebel. Does anyone know what kind of improvements I can expect over the F717. Is it worth upgrading?

Image quality wise you wont see much improvement at all......regardless of what people say, the image quality is going to be comparable. The real benefit is the SLR EOS lens system...if you don't mind buying lenses (the good ones are $1G+) you'll reap allot of benefit from the Canon system- everything from telephoto to extreme wide angle will be possible- notwithstanding the 1.5x multiplier the CCD adds.....

....so unless you plan on buying various lenses, the F717 is amongst the best of the non-slr digicams you can get...i've used and owned quite a few- get the EOS is your shooting needs aren't met with the F717- or else I'd say your Sony is excellent.

Is the burst performance of the Digital Rebel (2.5 fps, for 4 frames) better than that of the F717. I know the F717 does 3 frames burst but I'm not sure at what rate exactly.

Lastly- is that true....there will be no visible difference in quality between the shots?!

The Digital Rebel has much lower noise levels. Look at the comparison on DP Review of various noise levels from different cameras. The Canon designed CMOS used in the Digital Rebel and 10D are among the lowest noise levels they've recorded.

If you use the RAW mode, as opposed to JPEG, the image quality will be improved also. RAW aides in lower noise levels, 16 bit format and Adobe 1998 color space. All in all it adds up to picture improvements that I'm not sure the Sony offers.

Thanks. I ordered the EOS 10D today as a matter of fact. Decided to splurge....what's new. lol Now......whcih lense should I go with first?!

Keep in mind the 1.6x crop (focal length) multiplier. I like the Canon 28-135mm IS lens. Canon has several L series lens worthy of consideration such as the 16-35mm, 24-70mm, and the older 17-35mm, 28-70mm lenses. It just depends on your budget and what you like to shoot.

I purchased the Canon EF 28-105mm Wide Angle/Telephoto lens. I figured it would be versitile. As I don't do only one kind of shooting. There are so many lenses I'll have to devote some time into learning the differences between all of them. Is the lens I purchased sufficient- in other words is it of decent quality, baring the fact I know lenses go into the thousands of dollars. Is it better than the lens that comes with the EOS Digital Rebel kit?
