Is this true or false?

Canon's new Digital Rebel DSLR is available in a kit with a 18-55mm lens. The lens has the smooth and fast USM ultrasonic motor in Japan, but uses the inferior AFD micro-motor in the US.

I think I read that on the internet, so it must be true.

Actually, I think I read it on dpreview.com

Also, the Digital Rebel is now BLACK!!!
(a new black version will be shipped soon, anyway)

Yeah, I don't know why we get scre_ed from these companies. I posted a link at Area 51 with other examples regarding what we don't get here. Are consumers that stupid?

hmm...black rebel....wow...awesome...

heh...i just sold my rebel...i got a 10d now! :)

Seems like the 'Welcome Kit' version with Black Drebel, 18-55mm, 55-200mm is 148,000yen ~ 1340USD.

Add shipping, I'm guessing $150 ... under 1500USD total.

Is the ultrasonicmotor lens that much better than the other one?

wow...and now theyre throwing in a 55-200!

Robert Sato April 24th, 2004 05:08 AM

The regular 'lens kit' with the Drebel, 18-55mm seems to be 121,000 yen.

I've seen the US market sell the Drebel w/lens as low as $899 on the net.

I'm wondering if the USM lens is worth the difference?

The USM motor is not that critical in a small lens like the 18-55mm. The 55-200mm is not so great a lens. Canon had tons left over from their APS SLR experiments.

The USM lens would be quieter and focus slightly faster. It would make a difference in a larger, heavier lens.

Thanks. Your explanation makes me think that USM is nice but not worth the premium.

I haven't pulled the trigger on the Drebel nor the 10D. Kinda making the backordered muvo2 as my excuse to sit on the fence.

I've shot with both (own the 10D) and prefer the 10D. Image quality is the same, however. If you can live with the few limitations of the Digital Rebel, it would be my choice, on a cost basis. The 10D is a much better camera and worth the extra $$ if you're going to shoot much.

Sorry I am asking this question for a friend and perhaps you guys can clear this up... which Canon digital still cam can share lenses with the XL1? You see he has one of those, his photo kit (Nikon) got recently stolen from his car and he wants to buy all Nikon again... but I think if he buys a Canon digicam he might be able to share lenses... so which camera should he buy that will allow him to share lenses easily among his video and photo cams?
