Canon 5d.. anyone using it???

or should i jsut consider the 203d???

Ive also been tipped off that the 30d is coming soon and Canon have a new rule that no new DSLR will ever be less than full size CCD... so i dunno what to think..

any ideas? thoughts comments??

Peter

the announcement for the 20D replacement will probably be tomorrow. The 20D replacement will most certainly not be full frame but rather 1.6 just like the 20D. I would expect a 10MP or even the old 8MP with the newer bigger LCD, better AF and a few other things. Nothing major over the 20D.

As far as what you should buy it depends on what you plan on shooting

The 5D obviously has the full frame 13MPix sensor but only has 3 frames per second.

The 20D or its replacement have a 1.6 crop at 8Mpix and whatever the replacement will have but has 5fps.

The 20D has built in flash the 5D does not

Generally if you are shooting action/sports and such you are better off with the 20D type camera. If you are into shooting wide stuff such as landscapes and such you might be better off with the 5D

In any case it would be wise to wait a little longer as PMA and its announcements will either give you a new model to consider or at least will cause prices on older models such as the 20D to drop

I've been eating Kraft Dinner for the last 2 months or so.... Only another 4 to go and I'll be able to afford a 5d!

Gee, Dylan, good to know you don't want a 1Ds MkII. You'd be eating that stuff for 15 month or so.

There's some rather intense speculation gathered from sources outside of the states that claim the 20D successor will have a 1.3 crop factor as oppose to the 1.6. Any thoughts on this?

Jeff Toogood February 20th, 2006 01:45 PM

I'd highly doubt canon will make the 30D (35D, 50D??) a 1.3X camera. Just doesn't make any sense to do that.
They have invested time & money into EF-S lens that only will work on 1.6X cameras. I can't imagine they would discontinue these line with only three camera bodies (300D, 350D, 20D) able to use those lens.

Michael Salzlechner February 20th, 2006 07:30 PM

I seriously doubt the 1.3 crop myth. Most of these things are made up by people on dpr.

I own two 1.3 bodies now and from what canon made public they will abandon the 1.3 crop. Also the EF-S lenses wouldnt work on it as well.

Well we will see either tomorrow or in the next 4 days

Peter, I just thought about somthing: a full frame sensor, unlike those with a crop factor, shows every flaw of the lens. For example, I use the new 24-105mm/f4 L IS and the 24-70mm/f2.8 L lenses on my 5D. Unlike the much more expensive 24-70mm the 24-105mm shows very noticeable chromatic abberation and vignetting in the corners when used on the 5D at f4 to f5.6. At f8 both effects are no longer visible. On the 20D this is no problem at all due to the 1.6 crop factor.

The point is that you'll need the best lenses you can get for a full frame sensor body such as the 5D or 1Ds MkII. That adds even more $$ to the bill than the body only.

I don't know your budget, but may be this is something to consider.

I just had a look at the Canon website. The 30D has been anounced. There are some improvements over the 20D:

- 2.5" monitor with 230.000 pixels
- new faster 9 point AF
- larger frame buffer
- two frame rates: 3 fps and 5 fps
- more robust shutter (100.000 frames lifetime)

and some minor improvements. The sensor is the same 8.2 megapixel sensor of the 20D, or so it seems.

Funny timing...
MasterCard just dropped a brand new credit card at my door... A 5d would be a great way to warm it up... but then again, so would an HVX200.

Oooooooh boy.
Someone talk me out of this!

Sorry, Dylan, but I can't. The 5D is a magnificent camera.

But I'm afraid, you'll have to eat Kraft dinner for an additional month because you'll want the battery grip as well. And neither the grip for the 10D nor the 20D fits the 5D.

Keith Loh March 2nd, 2006 11:35 AM

Don't do the credit card debt thing, Dylan. Don't do it.

Use cash. 18% interest is a bad bad thing.
