Mamiya is no more

Mamiya will no longer sell cameras.
The Report, coming from Engadget has been confirmed from their Japanese site. Read on...

Yeah, I read that. But then I also read that this wasn't so. Which is correct?

D_mn. I think I'm going to buy another cam. Or a lens. When will this madness end?

Rainer Hoffmann April 26th, 2006 02:19 AM

Yeah, it's frightening. Already Canon and Nikon can basically do what they want and any competitor dropping out of the market makes it worse. However, I think that medium format cameras will be hard to sell in the future anyway. I've already sold all my Rolleiflex SL66 stuff and just retained the 4x5" large format camera and the DSLRs, of course.

To me, medium format does not make much sense anymore. It doesn't offer the quality and possibilities of the large format and the equipment is more bulky than a full format DSLR. And my feeling is (it's really only a feeling) that the technical quality of the slides I shot with my SL66 never matched the quality of the pictures I shoot with the 1Ds MkII.

I'm afraid, Frank, the madness will go on.

I've always prefered 35mm.

Nikon dropped a bunch of their cameras and lenses; Cosina/Zeiss is now making F-mount AIS lenses; and Cosina is working on an updated FM10. So strange.

Mamiya's press release page
On this page you will find the document (PDF) - dated on the 24th explains it.
I guess there was some confusion over initial reports, given my original post derived from Engadget came 3 days before this 'official' release, and it was just recently confirmed on DPreview as well.

Maybe it is now time for me to snag a Mamiya 6. I don't like the newer models. Maybe someone will even make a digital back for it, eh? That is if film either dies or inflates in price like gas. :-)
