Err99?

Just got a 80-200 EF lens for my Rebel, and keep getting Err99 from it. Sometimes it works, usually I get the error, and have to shut it down. Anyone ever experience this kind of stuff? When it works, it gets great pics, and the DOF on closer subjects is beautiful.

i believe this error is displayed when the computer in the camera finds the lens is incompatible, and can not control it properly. Maybe its just a poor contact - who knows.

Thanks Tim. I cleaned the contacts with an eraser, then cleaned them again with a Qtip and lens solution. They seem pretty clean, and still getting the error. The lens *should* be compatible.

is this lens new or used? also, maybe the aperture blades are stuck?

It's a used lens off ebay. I paid $90 for it. I talked to 3 shops, and the first two said they would send it to Canon. The 3rd said it's possibly the diaphram, $150.

I've gotten the err99 from what I think were power issues with my 20D. You might try cleaning the battery contacts.

Cannon- As far as I can tell, Err99 is basicly anything that doesn't fit into a simple category. This issue is specific to this lens, not the camera. I think Tim is closer to the problem, with the shutter.

I've contacted the seller, and he's willing to refund the money. I really liked the lens (Except for the errors), and would rather trade out if he has a similar one.
