Pentax K10D, is this real competition for Nikon's D80 and Canon's XTi?

DPReview Hands on preview
What do ya'll think of this little beauty?
I was quite surprised to see the feature list and price point.

and they also announced an interesting little 70mm f2.4 pancake lens.
I guess I'll just wait to see some more thorough reviews, but for now, this camera really has peaked my interests.

Frank Granovski September 14th, 2006 08:27 PM

That would be a nice lens, if it's any good....

How much for this new Pentax?

Jacob Mason September 14th, 2006 10:41 PM

A grand with kitty lens, and a few pennies less for body.
basically, a100 pricing. But appears to offer more than the a100, and the XTi, and the D80.
It looks like it has everything.
Just gotta wait and see what IQ is like.
Interesting tidbit of info. is that it's using a different 10MP CCD than Nikon or Sony. Rumors are it's a Samsung sensor.

Frank Granovski September 14th, 2006 11:59 PM

Just over $1000 USD? Really? That's cheap for both the body and the lens! A 70mm is quite useful. I'm looking forward to the reviews.

900 book price for the body. Looks nice on paper, may get one if its street price goes to 700

There are a coupla negatives though, dropping AA battery-friendly was a bad move along with the loss of 3200 ISO

Frank Granovski September 15th, 2006 05:31 AM

Is 3200 really needed? The most I go is 800 with film. So when is this beaut going to be available so I can bug some poor salesperson? :-)

Keith Loh September 15th, 2006 08:08 AM

If I hadn't already invested heavily in Canon I would be quite interested.

Frank Granovski September 15th, 2006 05:18 PM

That's the problem.... Everyone has their own mount, and even if an adaptor is available, the lens might not be compatible. Nevertheless, Canon makes great cameras and lenses; and pricey too.

A good third of my stuff is shot at 3200, for that 60s grainy Black White look.

What is interesting about this body is Pentax claim that their SR system is good for 2-4 stops. I would like to see some handheld test shots of say printed text at F200mm 1/30sec which if useful would certainly offset the lack of 3200

If it had a faster burst-rate it'd be awesome- 3FPS is a bit slow but decent for a consumer camera.
